Direct Selling, Network Marketing - Benefits, Myths, Problems & Great Equality Factors

Myth No. 1:  Almost all people who participate in direct selling lose money.

DSA research shows that over 80 percent of business-oriented recruits have very modest goals when joining a company and the vast majority … have their expectations met or exceeded. There is protection against financial loss.

Myth No. 2: Self-consumption by sales persons is a problematic practice.

The industry’s standard of the buy-back removes the possibility of inventory loading if the firm is bound by the buy-back and it is properly administered.


Myth No. 3: Multilevel direct sales firms will fail due to geometric progression and turnover rates.

The reality is that a majority join a direct sales firm either after having been a customer or wishing to buy its products at a discounted price.  This percentage of “discount buyers” may approach over 90 percent of the salesforce of some firms and account for over 90 percent of product sales. This can also account for some of the high turn over rates.


.C. Problems that Can Harm Direct Selling Network Marketing Business

1. Misconduct by a Member of the Sales Team

  • Exaggerated earnings claims made to prospects
  • Exaggerated or false product claims;
  • High-pressure recruiting and sales tactics.
  • Excessive non-corporate training/motivational expenses.

2. Company's Business Practices should not motivate or incentivize these problems.

3. Company's Enforcement of Distributor Policies and Code of Ethics
