What Are You Selling? House Paint, Abstract Image or Serious Home Business - To Pitch or Not To Pitch

There's one big question you've got to ask, "What is it I'm selling, anyway?"

If you're selling house paint then you can jump in, name your product and aim a direct pitch: "you might want to buy this." 

If you're selling a home business opportunity then you might want to hold back, warm up the prospect and logically ease him or her into what's for sale.

These are two very different propositions in vastly different situations. 

After all, a poorly painted house can be fixed.

A poorly constructed home business plan is most often doomed to implode. And broken pieces are hard to put together into another WHY BOTHER vision.  

Would you agree that the more aware the prospect is about the product or opportunity, the more direct you can be with your pitch?

People know what they are looking for in house paint - qualities, colors, coverage. They may have a spatial problem and the solution is a new bright coat of paint applied with the right tools and skills. They do not resist a sales pitch and like to hear details about Big Bold Results and how to save money.  They may even trust the local handyman who has given them advice before.

Now let's consider the other side of the spectrum - selling home business success. It is not a tangible product - it's complicated, easily mis-categorized. It is an abstraction, filled with hopeful WHY reasons but unsteady, untried and worrisome. 

Will you swing a direct pitch at them - here is my home business site - a couple of videos will do - and expect they will buy into it as easily as cans of paint?  How resistant will prospects be, especially when there may be several pitches flying at them? 

Would you agree, you need a more indirect approach to show a few broader strokes for home business success?

Perhaps, you might first tease about a secret or a special challenge, news about huge changes in the New Economy, or maybe tell a story.  People react to stirred emotions and personal values BEFORE they get that there is something for sale here.

Some good prospects may be downright jaded.  And a more indirect approach may warm them up all over again.

Once you've sorted that out, it's a good beginning.
