Is Social Media Just Fake News With No Real Friends Who Like 2 Important Rules

Rick:  Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that. Casablanca

This realization will hit home like it did for me or maybe cause a little pain because it will make you ask a simple question: How many social media friends really care a hill of beans for you?

False news is defined as a deliberate spread of misinformation...with the intent to mislead in order to gain financially or politically.  So are you a false friend if you label yourself as social media friend and never say a word?

Social media marketing is a wonderful expanse with the goal of producing content that you can share with a social network to help promote your products and get more customers and sales.  But are your friends real or fake if they bypass your promotions to make you prosperous at the risk of their own programs?

Perhaps we need a different reframing of social media based on this observation about Facebook, although other sites also can be counted in.

Imagine you are trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day, you walk down the street and tell passers-by what you have eaten, how you feel at the moment, what you have done the night before, what you will do later and with whom.

You give them pictures of your family…your dog, your favorite recipes, your gardening tips, how to take things apart, having lunch, driving around town, anniversary bouquets or standing in front of landmarks. Doing what anybody and everybody else does everyday.

You read their conversations, watch their videos, give them the thumbs up and tell them you "like" them.  And, once in awhile, a passer-by may even invite you to befriend them, and you do, and never touch base again.

In a real news world if you did this, you will probably have at least 3 people following you: a police officer, a private investigator and a psychiatrist!

Of course, I'm also saying there are real advantages to social media because it is possible to turn more fake friends into real friends by following two simple rules:

RULE 1: Success requires more listening and less talking. Target the kinds of friends you want and join discussions to learn what’s important to them. Add value to the conversation like real friends do, not clutter. In reality, real friends do not happen overnight, although you just might catch "lightning in a bottle" by pure chance.

RULE 2: Be ready to reciprocate content you value by others. You really can’t expect others to share your content if you don’t do the same for them. If you spend all your time on the social Web directly promoting your products and services, people will start avoiding your conversions.

Sadly, at this point, I admit I am a false news friend only. But that can change if you wish to talk and share more about your experiences and dreams. I have never had a bad conversation yet with a networker!

Looking forward beyond fake news to real people,

Annemarie
