Anyone who did not grow up with computers has watched the great evolution of the English and other languages during the past couple decades.

Think back to about 15 or 20 years ago when no one had yet coined, let alone spoken, so many of the words and terms that today are part of everyday conversations. The only paper dictionary I own is the same one I used many years ago in college. Try looking up these recently-created words in a dictionary published in the 1960's, and you’ll see that most do not appear.

A gigabyte today is commonly known as a gig. The word “gigabyte” isn’t in my college dictionary. Had I heard the word years ago, I believe I would have thought it was some kind of dance. And a "gig" was defined as a carriage-type vehicle or a boat.

One of my favorite recently-coined words is “blog.” Isn’t that the sound people make right before they “lose their stomach?” (Sorry, rather gross, I know.) It isn’t enough that blog is an odd-sounding word, but it started out as a noun and “morphed” into a verb as well. Right now I am “blogging.”

Before the blog was created, Google came on the scene. Google, not just a website, but a search “engine.” Until the early 1990’s, an engine was generally considered “a machine that converted an energy source into mechanical power or motion.” And then, of course, the word "Google" too evolved into a verb, as in, “Why don’t you google it?”

Another word that was once only a noun but is now a verb is “text.” “Text me the number.” “Do not text while driving.”

I have a friend who has chosen not ever use a computer or the internet. Several years ago, she was adamant about it. In the last year or so, however, she says she feels as though people are speaking a foreign language on television. What TV program or product sold on TV today doesn’t have a Facebook page and its own website?

I could probably write a Kindle book about all the newly created words… A book that contains no paper or fiber of any kind? I guess that will have to wait for another article (a word that still means what it always did!).

Fascinating blog. As communication means have changed, so has language. I wonder what my English teacher would say? Thanks

Coach Goggans   316 day(s) ago
Interesting isn't it? What's next...

Julie Klein    316 day(s) ago
Thanks for the typewriter mentions. I was a secretary for most of my life, and I started on a manual (not electric) machine. I sure do remember the red/black ribbons Bruce. I just sold two electric typewriters last year. Really! People are still using them. I also started out (in my youth) with a 3-step photocopy machine. Yikes I AM old!

Hi Julie, yes i can remember, you would hear a word that you never heard before ...what!...what was that? and you hear others talking about it and curiosity finally gets the better of you and you find out what its all about...aah those were the days when my teenage sons thought i was too thick to understand lol.thank you for sharing this great blog.

Terri Pattio    316 day(s) ago
Julie you did a brilliant job with this post and I really enjoyed reading it. I will be sharing this one to the masses. ~Terri Pattio - MLM Coach/Mentor with a servant's heart

Thanks Julie for the "blast from the past". I remember in high school the big transition from "Push Key Typewriters to Electric Typewriters" (no copy and past back then). I recently showed my daughters my old "Sliderule" and they all said, "What's That????" My, times have changed in the last 20 years!

I looked at my two kids creating their own PowerPoint presentations in 5th grade 5 years ago and couldn't believe it!! It's amazing how much technology is a part of everyone's lives! My kids are teaching me new terms!

Nice blogpost. thanks for sharing

Bruce Ashman   316 day(s) ago
Oh Julie you have touched my youth with this one. I hear you all the way. I remember when a typewriter (didn't you just love those multi-colour ribbons - black and red all in one) with a single font type was all the rage. And now they have key boards (my parents had one as well - it hung on the wall and you put keys on it). And as for "Facebook" - isn't that just a photo album? TB&L

Bill Bateman     316 day(s) ago
Just when I got my fax machine figured out they pretty much got rid of 'em. I hear what you're saying. Thanks for your humor - your info - your perspective

We write articles on blogging platforms. Even the meaning of platform has changed. Blog to us means "what happened today." We do need to write more of those. How can you relate your life today to your products or services?

Don Sabelhaus    317 day(s) ago
Thanks for a great read Julie, it is funny how words and their meaning change from generation to generation. I thought it was strange when my children would use a word that meant something completely different than my meaning, now I have grandchildren. TB&L my friend

Sig, you speak 6 languages? I am impressed. The only other person I personally knew who spoke that many languages was my grandmother who spoke German, Polish, English, Yiddish, Hebrew and Russian. I believe a couple of them were pretty similar. Thank you all for taking a few minutes to read and comment on my post.
