According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2009, 50.7 million residents – that’s 16.7% of the population were uninsured. I’ve read reports that state those numbers have increased dramatically.
Those who are unemployed certainly cannot afford to pay for their own health insurance, and fewer employers are providing health insurance to those who are employed. The cost of health insurance has increased to the point where very few people can afford to purchase health insurance if their employer doesn’t pick up at least a portion of the cost. And, of the reduced number of companies that do offer insurance, many require their employees to pay a larger percentage of the premium.
