Try
verb, tried, try•ing, noun, plural tries. verb (used with object) 1. to attempt to do or accomplish: Try it before you say it's simple. 2. to test the effect or result of (often followed by out ): to try new method; to try a recipe out. 3. to endeavor to evaluate by experiment or experience: to try a new field; to try a new book. 4. to test the quality, value, fitness, accuracy, etc., of: Will you try a spoonful of this and tell me what you think of it? 5. Law . to examine and determine judicially, as a cause; determine judicially the guilt or innocence of (a person).
How many times have you said it?
“I’ll try to be there.” “I’m going to try bowling.” “I will try a taste of this ***.” “I will try out this new home business.”
I know what how the dictionary defines it, but sometimes I think the word should be removed from the English language!
You will either do it, or you will not do it. If we say we will “try,” we have no real intention of doing “it.”
“I’ll try to be there.” Translation: I have no intention of attending, but I don’t want you to feel bad, so I won’t say “no.”
“I’m going to try bowling.” Translation: I know I’ll be terrible at it. I’m no good at any sports.
“I will try a taste of this ***.” Translation: It looks terrible. It smells terrible. I am sure I’ll hate it.
“I will try out this new home business.” Translation: I’ll pay the required fee to start. I’ll look at what the business is about, but I’ll never put forth any serious effort. In a few weeks, I’ll quit.
Too many of us are afraid of the word “no,” a perfectly legitimate word.
If I can’t make it to your party, or if I simply don’t want to come, I’ll just say “no thank you” or tell a little white lie so as not to hurt your feelings, “I have another engagement.”
Before I’ll try bowling (a silly example in my case, because I used to bowl & loved it), I’ll either give it my best effort or I will not make an attempt.
If something looks like it will taste terrible, I likely won’t take a single bite. If it is simply unfamiliar, I likely will take a bite to see how it tastes.
Over the years, many people tried to recruit me into their businesses. The vast majority didn't interest me in the least, and I came right out and said so. But I have been involved in a few home businesses.
>>I worked the first one, and worked hard, for a full year. When at the end of a year, I was not earning money, I left the company. >>I worked the second one full time for a few years, hoping, believing it would get better. I was wrong. I finally realized that the company was not a good match for me. >>Finally, a year ago, I started my third – and final – home business. I say final, because I love what I’m doing, and I’m good at it! Plus, the icing on the cake, I’m successful!
I didn’t “try” any of the businesses. I went in with every intention to succeed with each one. I stuck with each long enough to be certain whether or not it was truly a good fit for me. I am very fortunate to have found one that fits like a glove.

 | | Julie, excellent blog from a great decider! |
| | | | | Wow! I'm impressed by the responses to my blog. They could be a blog themselves! Great feedback. Thanks to all of you. |
| | | | | That's one of the reasons why there is a 97% failure rate in this industry, they try something for 90 days, if it doesn't work, they quit. This can go on and on and by doing this 90-day try-out time frame, they begin to lack any Credibility whatsoever, then no followers. Stick to the task at hand, and you will grow character, perseverance, discipline, help as many people as you can and the money will flow directly to you, when you least expect it. |
| | | | | Thanks for sharing. I must say I love the word " try, because when some say's they will try there best I don't want them to join me in my business. So the word try could really be a process of elimination. |
| | | | | You had me from the first to the last word with intrigue. Well put. I love your candidness. You know who you are. Some people are followers and you definitely are not, which is great. knowing your own mind is the first tool of survival. I loved your blog. More people should read it. |
| | | | | Saying I'll try it is procrastinating because there's no set time as to when you will. Thanks for sharing. |
| | | | | | | | | Seems like everyone "tries" because they are afraid of failure. Thank you for the post! |
| | | | | Hi Julie, you are correct.nice post. |
| | | | | It feels that there are so many that are afraid to fully commit to something and I've never understood that. Trying isn't giving 100%. DOING gets it done! Great post. |
| | | | | Thanks. Enjoyed your post. |
| | | | | Great Blog Julie ! Thanks for sharing. |
| | | | | Love this blog. I agree the word try should be removed from our thoughts. |
| | | | | The overuse of the word "try" has always been a pet peeve of mine.
Thanks to you all for reading and sharing your thoughts. |
| | | | | Thanks for sharing your thoughts Julie, it brought back memories of what my father always said, if it's worth doing it's worth doing well. TB&L my friend |
