Distractions...

I have been in network marketing for several years. I am generally a very organized person. Lately I’ve found I am distracted more easily than is my norm. The result? Obviously I am not getting as much accomplished as usual.

I really MUST clean up my desk. I have several stacks of papers all over my “C” shaped desk, a pretty good sized one. Some of these papers should be filed away. Some have been there for so long that, in reality, I will never look at them again or use them as I originally intended. Then there are those few documents that are important and I look at nearly every day.

On top of my cluttered desk, I have bulletin boards on the walls around my desk for the quick-reference items. Most of these I use several times a day. I usually keep it pretty organized and neat, but there are a few things I could toss since they are outdated.

A cluttered desk, for me, causes cluttered thinking. As I have gotten older, focusing is a little more difficult than it used to be. But, when I accumulate this clutter around me, I really see a decline in my productivity.

Then, there is that bad habit I have picked up of checking my email way too often. When I open it frequently, I get distracted from whatever I was doing and end up replying to emails, etc. By the time I am done, I sometimes forget what I was doing before. If I checked it when I first start working in the morning, right after my lunch break and again at the end of the day, that should be plenty.

So, I have now spelled out my problem, and I am fully aware of the solution. So, as soon as I submit this blog, I AM going to begin working on the clutter on my desk. On Monday, I will re-organize and clean up my bulletin boards. Finally, and this one is the most difficult, I must actually CLOSE my email while I am working on other things so I won’t be tempted to check it whenever I see new email has arrived.

My friends, I have just put my commitment in writing, and I am telling all of you what I AM going to do. By the beginning of next week, I will be cleaned up and more focused, and I will back to being the productive person I like to be.

Thank you for being their folks. I will not fail you!

You make such a good point about the clutter and the email. When I went back to University to get my Bachelors degrees in my thirties I had to clean my house before I could study. Seems strange to some but it helps me. Thanks for the great post.

I hate clutter too. I hardly ever use paper any more. I just open a notepad and start typing and file it. I wish I had this Computer 30 years ago. A TL&B for you my friend

Julie I copied, pasted and emailed your blog to myself. Hope you do not mind. Your blog brought things to my mind I might write on.

I'm working my way to neatness at my desk a little at a time. At work, I used to be so organized it was difficult to believe I was the same person when I got to my home office. Now that there is only one, I need to do the same thing that you are. I'm just going a little slower at this point.

Marnee Masales   353 day(s) ago
Hi Julie thanks for sharing. I always said if we admit our problem or faults that is a good start. Now you are going to help the situation. Good for you. Good luck.

Good for you Julie.. Make a commitment and make it known to others and you will follow through.

You're definitely not alone. When you're out in the public's eye daily, it's seems as though my "desk" is the last thing I want to do. Believe it or not, I can find most anything under the rubble. But it's more than a task when you're use to keeping a clean and organised work area. The good thing about the clutter is that it makes me look busy. The worst part is that I don't like clutter. Thanks for sharing.

Don Sabelhaus    354 day(s) ago
I've always heard catharsis is good for the soul, you should be feeling pretty good now that you've told the whole world about your cluttered desk LOL don't feel bad, mine would probably make yours look like a poster for neatness. TB&L my friend

Julie Klein    354 day(s) ago
From your comments, it seems I am not alone! Since until recently, I was neat and organized, I think I can maintain it now that it is cleaned up. Thanks everyone for your great feedback.

I've made a conscious effort to keep my paperwork to a minimum. I keep a spiral notebook with my notes in it and that goes with me where ever I am with my laptop. 2 or 3 other booklets are tucked into the back of the notebook and that's it! Clutter can be so detrimental and with a husband and three kids, I have enough distractions as it is! Congratulations on making the "decluttering" a top priority.

Julie Klein    354 day(s) ago
Woohoo! Since posting this blog, I took a lunch break and then dug in. My desk now has only two small organized stacks. My bulletin boards are neatly aligned, with about 1/4 of the stuff I "needed" now gone. My waste basket is nearly full. My email is CLOSED! The last will be a tough one for me, addict to email that I am. Thanks for all the great comments! Now, back to organized, productive work!

Donna Jones   354 day(s) ago

Hello Julie. I too find myself checking my email to much. Thanks for reminding me to not check it so much. It is so easy to get distracted from what you are working on at the time. Take care Julie and thank you for writing.

Lisa F-Schofield   354 day(s) ago
Hi Julie, I have to agree with Carolyn when she says "clutter" will clutter your thinking..good luck to you with getting that clutter cleaned up..and get back to us when your done..I'm sure there are some of us that can us you help with our clutter..lol!! :~)

Carolyn Coleman-Grady   354 day(s) ago
Julie you were speaking to me, clearing up clutter papers is important. It clutters your thinking, you loose focus it just becomes a mess. Thanks for sharing.

Deleon Duckworth   354 day(s) ago
The Results you can have from Being Organized are way higher if you not!! Wishing you Success

Ron "Simplified" Myers   354 day(s) ago
Great message Julie. I used to get caught with the email but now I plan it. There are only 2 times during the day that I can check it and I am only giving it a certain amount of time (like 15 minutes). That keeps me from thinking about it because it is already planned. Same with other areas. I do get caught sometimes - lol, but I recognize it and get back on track. Thanks for the share my friend

Terrie Campbell   354 day(s) ago
Good points, I find my email leads me away from my work sometimes too.

Johnny Lee   354 day(s) ago
Eail is my biggest distraction. Invariably I'll get a link to some site and waste a lot of time in browsing. nice to know someone else batting the problem.
