Another Step Forward.....

By now I assume almost everybody has been exposed to the latest decision by the Supreme Court.   In a 5 to 4 vote, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-gender marriage and is protected under the 14th Amendment, citing the clauses that guarantee equal protection and due process.

This latest decision marks the largest growth of marriage rights in the United States since the 1967 ruling in Loving v. Virginia that struck down state laws barring interracial marriages.  The U.S. is the 21st country to legalize same-gender marriage nationwide. Married same-gender couples will have the same legal rights and benefits as their heteros_____ counterparts, including recognition on official documentation such as birth and death certificates.

While not getting into the specifics of the case, all of us should celebrate this forward step for basic human rights such as the pursuit of happiness.  For too long the oppression of this minority group has not only been tolerated, but ‘lauded’.  While protecting the rights of ‘hate groups’, the rights of those oppressed by these same groups have been hindered.

In asking several people their opinion via one-on-one conversations, emails and miscellaneous forums/social sites, the general consensus has been that basic human rights must be promoted and protected for all.  Please keep in mind that personal beliefs, religious or otherwise, was not a part of questions posed; it was only regarding basic human rights including the pursuit of happiness.

Personally, I applaud this step forward …how about you?
