It ain't over till it's over

On Wednesday, President Obama tweeted "Yogi Berra was an American original - a Hall of Famer, jovial prophet, & a humble veteran. We'll miss you, Yogi, but your legacy ain't over."

Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra was born May 12, 1925, and passed over on September 22nd. And although I am not a fan of baseball, I am a fan of those who have achieved success and mastery of their art. And indeed, Yogi Berra exemplifies one who has had a stellar career on the baseball diamond as a catcher, manager, and coach.

Having played in the minor and major leagues, his legendary achievements on the field are many. But here are just a few:

According to Wikipedia, Yogi Berra.....

  • played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) (1946–63, 1965), all but the last for the New York Yankees
  • appeared in 21 World Series and won 13 of them, either as a player, coach, or manager
  • was an 18-time All-Star and 10-time World Series champion as a player
  • had a career batting average of .285
  • completed 358 home runs
  • batted in 1,430 runs
  • is regarded as one of the greatest catchers in baseball history
  • is one of only five players to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award three times.

Berra, who dropped out of school after the eigth grade, will be remembered not only for having had an outstanding baseball career but also for having given us some delightfully funny, but witty quotes:

You can observe a lot by just watching.

It's like déjà vu all over again.

Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.

You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six.

You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you might not get there.

A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore.

Never answer an anonymous letter.

We made too many wrong mistakes.

Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours.

It ain't over till it's over.

Yogi Berra... gone but not forgotten!
