Born Free is a popular 1966 song I remember so vividly as a young child growing up in New Providence. The music was created by English composer/conductor John Barry Prendergast, OBE [1933-2011] and the words written by English lyricist Don Black, OBE [1938-present]. This song was written for the 1966 film of the same name and sung by my all-time favorite English baritone vocalist, Matt Monro, which also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Known as the Matt Monro song, there are other recorded cover versions by Americans pianist Roger Williams, singer/actor/record producer Andy Williams, and singer/actor/director/producer Frank Sinatra as well as an instrumental version by English multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist Hank Marvin among many others.
The Born Free story actually began in 1942 when British wildlife conservationist and game warden husband, George Adamson, MBE aka Baba ya Simba, Swahili for “father of lions” [1906-1989] and Austrian naturalist, artist and international best-selling author Joy Adamson [1910-1980] met at a Christmas party in Northern Kenya. Joy was married at the time and George was a lonely warden in the Kenyan bush. They married several months later. The Matt Monro song was originally inspired by the book Born Free, written by Joy, published by Harvill Press in 1960 and subsequently printed in several languages. The book describes Joy’s experiences raising a lion cub named Elsa the Lioness, an orphaned lioness cub they raised together and later released into the wild.
This 59.05 seconds video tells the Born Free story of George and Joy Adamson as two of the world’s first wild life conservationists superstars and of life in the harsh beautiful landscapes in the African wild.
Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart
Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star
Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide
Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'Cause you're born free
Songwriters: John Barry, Don Black
