Chapter Eleven

Being Willing and Obedient

When we fall off the chosen path of the Lord, we sometimes get discouraged and feel ashamed. We tell ourselves there’s no need of praying because we have sinned so much. But don’t feed in to that. The Lord has mercy on the willing and looks in our hearts to see if we really want to be obedient. If we are sincere, then He will have patience with us during our fight with the flesh.

Bread of Life

Don’t you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master? You could choose sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God and receive his approval. Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you have obeyed with all your heart the new teaching God has given you. Now you are free from sin, your old master, and you have become slaves to your new master, righteousness.

Romans 6:16-18 (NLT)

Willing to Change

Because I was about to turn fifteen in a few months, my caseworker helped me get accepted into the Young Adult Guidance Center program. The program was designed to help anyone from the ages of fourteen to twenty-two who did not have goals, independent living skills, employment, and needed help getting a residence. When I moved into YAGC, I did not know what to expect. I was missing my friends back in Columbus, and wished I had moved back in with my mom.

When I arrived at the center, I was introduced to the director, Mr. Simpson. He went over the programs plans, goals, and rules. The first goal of the program is obtaining employment. Then, you are to set up a bank account in which half of whatever you made was deposited and the other half was split between you and the center. The program was originally designed to last up to eight to twelve months. By then, if the participants had been doing what they were supposed to do, they should have enough money to find their own place to live. Since I was in foster care, the rules were a little different for me. I had to stay in school, obtain a workers’ permit, and then find a job. The thing that really got my attention about the program was that all of my money would go to my bank account because foster care paid the center my rent.

I decided that I would give it an honest chance, do my best, and stay out of trouble. And, for about eight months, that is exactly what I did. I went to school, obtained a workers’ permit, got a job working in a church pantry, and stayed out of trouble and off drugs. I learned how to ride the Marta bus, do my own laundry, and cook for myself. I was very successful for my age, and had saved over two thousand dollars. I was willing to change, put my disobedience to the side, and was living an honest life. What surprised me was that I was happy.

Obedient and Willing

We are given by God a free will to do what’s right Or, if we wish, to go down the path of doing wrong. Most will choose to be disobedient and weak.

But a few will obey and stay strong. Those who are obedient will get to live a long and prosperous life.

The ones that are rebellious will see their days chopped down As if cut with a knife. Some are willing to change,

And take help from the Lord’s hands. Others harden their hearts, And carry out their own evil plans, Never listening to advice, and only judging for themselves,

Then wondering what happened

When they reach their young and early death.

The wise ones that listen will enjoy wisdom and spiritual healing,

But the only way into this group is to be to God willing and obedient.

Way of Life

If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land; but if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Isaiah 1:19-20 (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, You have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know I’m willing to change and want to be obedient to your commands, but my flesh is weak and I need your help. Please lead me, Father and give me the strength to always obey You. I put my life in Your hands and pray for Your guidance. I love You. In Your Holy Son Jesus’ name I pray. Amen!
