An Accidental Talent

An Accidental Talent

Recently I read a fascinating piece in the Guardian Newspaper about a 39 year old man named Derek who after suffering a serious head injury found that he had a new hidden talent. During a pool party in the company of friends, Derek dived into the water not realizing just how shallow it was. The after effects of any head trauma can be unpredictable, but often resulting in life changing consequences.

In this case Derek was to discover that among the difficult challenges of blurred vision, some permanent loss of hearing, and frequent agitation, he also found himself drawn to playing the piano.

He was able to play fluently and without pause much to the surprise of his musician friend who was very well aware that Derek had never played the piano before. Neurologists have diagnosed 'Acquired Savant Syndrome' and Derek is unique because he is a musical savant, which is the only documented case. The disrupted vision of strange shapes he experiences is a form of 'Synaesthesia' and amazingly is linked to the music he hears in his head. Unfortunately this is constant and has proved to be exhausting at times. But what really makes this story interesting is the fact that Derek does not want to go back to how he was before the accident.

He has welcomed this new ability with all its daily challenges, knowing that it could be gone again without warning. He is a happier man today even though the accident resulted in him losing his job and facing financial instability. Perhaps the process has allowed him to discover his true self, rejecting a life of constraints put in place by others. When terrible setbacks happen in our lives we can see them as an ending, or we can recognize the potential of a new beginning. Derek has grabbed this opportunity to move his life in a new direction, as long as the ability remains he will continue to play and compose, taking life one day at a time but never for granted.

I wish you Happiness, Health and Wealth!!!
