To See the Good in the World You Must First See the Good in People.

To See the Good in the World You Must First See the Good in People.

If I were to ask you how you felt about the world, would your answer be Hopeful, Optimistic and Excited, or Fearful, Discouraged and Melancholy? Unfortunately, many will identify with the latter and feel sure this assessment of the world is wholeheartedly correct.

The conclusion that the world is a sad and bad place seems to be firmly rooted in how we feel about people. For example, if we believe in our hearts that most people are inherently bad, this can only sour our view of the world. Fore it is people who inhabit the world and so the world is a reflection of who we are as people.

I will admit, seeing the 'good' in everyone is not always an easy thing to do, especially if that 'good' is overshadowed by poor behaviour and bad choices.

However, in order to see the good in others, we must be willing to 'look' for it. This takes some effort on our part because people don't always reveal their best to us straight away and we're often too quick to criticise rather than compliment the good in others, how easy it is the focus on the flaws and short-comings instead.

As children we were constantly warned of stranger danger and foul play, while encouragement to recognise good deeds and human kindness featured less strongly. Of course it's important for a child to learn that not everyone is of sound character but there's a problem when we go on to believe that the majority of people are 'up to no good'. So what’s feeding this negative thought process? Mass media plays a central role in how we think of the world and the people in it. The 'good news' uplifting stories tend not to hit the big headlines or fill serious column inches. Oh no, that's the domain of the 'bad news' featuring individuals of questionable behaviour. The sad reality is, the more pessimistic the story, the bigger the headline.

The good news is (yes there is good news) the more we seek out the good in people the more good we will find. It's a bit like adjusting your frequency to only focus on picking up the good vibrations from other people. You will notice things about people you missed before and have the opportunity to let them know that you can see the good in them shining through.

Have you noticed how people are so surprised by random acts of kindness; they say things like ”I can't believe how kind and generous he or she was …" or they say” I didn't know that anyone cared that much …

The truth is, kindness and gentleness is a true expression of being humane/human. That's exactly what we are meant to be. People are inherently good and we need to start believing that or risk developing a very tainted view of this beautiful world we live in.

What would this world be without you and your contribution to it?
I’m glad you're here! My hope for you is that your goodness shines through and in turn attracts and inspires the goodness in others.
