Beware the Silent Assassin

Beware the Silent Assassin

Whilst listening to an audio on the subject of Psychological Reversal, something very interesting occurred to me. First of all, if you're unfamiliar with the concept of Psychological reversal, here is a simple definition.

Psychological reversal is a subconscious condition of self-sabotage that is, of making choices that bring you misery instead of well-being and the happiness you think or say you want.

An example of psychological reversal in action would be when a person states they want to lose weight and after many attempts of dieting and exercise find themselves either heavier than before, and if they do lose the weight, soon revert back to where they started.
It is my understanding that psychological reversal has little to do with willpower or strength of character but rather, the result of deep subconscious dominating beliefs.

Are you practicing Psychological Reversal?
One of the tell-tale signs of psychological reversal being present is the use of self-sabotaging language. You may have the very best of intentions and be sure of your commitment to see those intentions through, however if your inner dialogue contradicts your intentions, you are already defeated.

Beware the silent Assassin
I once read somewhere that you should never underestimate the power of words. I truly believe words can either free you or hold you captive. This brings me nicely to a word in particular I call a 'silent assassin'. The danger of this unassuming word is often missed because we use it with such regularity, especially when self-sabotaging. So what is this word and why is it a silent assassin?

The silent assassin I am referring to is the word - BUT.
Here are some examples

“I want to live a happy and fulfilling life BUT, I cannot see how to make it happen".

“Losing weight is a priority BUT, I don't have the time to exercise or cook nutritious meals".

“I really want to be financially independent BUT, my lack of experience is stacked against me".

“The love of my life is out there BUT, it looks like I'll never find them".

"This is the year to get my health on track BUT, I'm running out of time".

The silent assassin is the killer of dreams, the liquidator of hope and most dangerous of all, a silent oppressor of your greatness. Every time you use the word 'but' in a statement you are negating everything that comes before it. In other words, your true and lasting beliefs reveal themselves in what you say 'after' the word BUT in a statement. If you told yourself “I am going to be a success BUT, it's going to be a long and painful process". your subconscious would then go to work to protect you from experiencing unnecessary pain and sabotage any chances of securing the success you 'say' you want.

When we use similar negative words like never, impossible and can't, we are holding ourselves captive in a self-made prison. In isolation these words may seem perfectly harmless but when used in the context of declaring our deepest desires, they wreak havoc.

The only 'but' you really need is the 'butt' you're sitting on.

Pay close attention to the words you're using. Avoid the silent assassin self-sabotaging talk and instead, choose words that will empower and strengthen your cause. By using positive self-affirming language you will reprogram the subconscious mind and what you say and believe will then work in perfect harmony.
