Why You DON'T Want Electronic Devices in Your Home This Holiday Season

I just saw something that made me really sad....
A local retailer sends out a toy catalog when we are getting close to the holidays. My kids love looking at it and telling me everything they want! I have been flipping through it myself to see what they offer, and what the differences are between their toys and Discovery Toys.
Here is what was sad:
One WHOLE PAGE was of laptops and 'learning devices'. A whole page of pure electronics, for kids!!! This really saddened me because you know they are going to be some of the top sellers. Parents: you may not realize it, but all this screen time is very detrimental to your child's developing brain. So please, please, PLEASE consider that when making your choices this holiday season.
We want to do what's best for our child. And over and over, studies have shown that too much screen time is not only not helpful, it can be downright damaging to our kids' brains. Please encourage your children to shut off the TV and find something else, and more fun, to do.
So what's more fun than TV and computer games? Games and toys that the parent interacts with the child. Your child loves YOU. He wants YOU to spend time with him. So do it. Provide toys and games that promote parent-child interaction and help you to be a part of your child's life.
When your child is watching TV, do you feel like you are participating in his life? Or that you are just an annoying person that they want to go away so they can keep watching?
It may be hard to imagine less screen time in your home. You may imagine a lot of fighting and screaming and naughty behavior when the rule is made that the screen is not going to be on all the time. Be strong. You are doing what is best for your child. Weather the couple weeks of fighting, and you will see what a difference it makes in your life.
Remember: children spell love T-I-M-E. Give them your time. Show them you care. The rewards you reap will be amazing.
