Social Media Sites and the variety of Social Media "Hybrid" sites have become a personal passion of mine in the last couple years. This new advertising media has made a mark.
Lot's of media come and go. Consider Newspapers. My first job was "Paper boy". My ten and seven year old sons don't even know what one is.
Who knows if Social Media will someday become the Newspaper of the next generation but for now...for sure...business needs to be involved
Here are World Wide Alexa Rankings for some of the sites I actually belong and post to...
#1 Google+
#2 Facebook
#3 YouTube
#8 Twitter
#12 LinkedIn
#38 Pinterest
#44 Blogger
#157 MySpace
#309 Orkut
#1,465 FriendFeed
#2,017 Plurk
#9,142 BetterNetworker
#9,523 IBOToolbox
#53,122 ISMMagic
#70,876 Brijj
#87,715 skaDoogle
#127,950 Kiltr
#395,137 BetterWebBuilder
Several observations go along with this raw data...
First of all higher rankings only mean more views by the citizens of the online world
It doesn't necessarily mean anything else. You have consider a lot of other factors. Here are a few...
#1 - What Niche are you in?
If you are marketing to Scottish People exclusively #127,950 ranking Kiltr may be your best Social Media platform because that's their target audience
If you are marketing products or services to Recruiters LinkedIn is infinitely better than Twitter
#2 - "Big Fish Small Pond Syndrome"
When you are in a "Social Media Pond" like Twitter my @BillBateman1 profile (my main profile) has 59,251 followers and Nobody - metaphorically - knows me. In IBO Toolbox I'm a big deal with less than 2,000 connections
#3 - Ease of building
If you are using LinkedIn you must learn how to avoid the dreaded "IDK" that's short for "I Don't Know" Bill - or Jane or whoever. Too many people that you try to follow in LinkedIn who give you the thumbs down "IDK" and you are on probation - too too many and you are BANNED.
On Twitter it's the 10 percent rule - once you cross the 2,000 following threshold you can't follow more than 10% more tweeple than those following you. If you have 10,000 followers - you can follow a maximum of 11,000 people - not 11,001
On IBOToolbox - there are no restrictions on the number of people I can follow. Doesn't make people follow me back...
But why shouldn't they...I'm a big deal here :)
After Thought...
Remember to be successful in marketing you must #1 Match your Message to the Market you are targeting with the #2 Right Message for that Market using the #3 Best Media possible
Example...
In one of my businesses we sell a lot of Annuities to 70+ year old folks. We don't find them on Social Media Sites - they just aren't visiting them. We do find them using target direct mail and with seminar marketing and through Speaking engagements with organizations they belong to. They also watch Cable TV and listen to AM radio.
IBOToolbox is one of my favorites - I'm posting this blog through their platform - but it's not a perfect fit for every business - nothing is
Be Smart - Get Busy - Be Effective
To your Great Success
