Over the last 10 years the trend of working at home has increased at a tremendous rate
If you are a Commercial Office Landlord it has been a very bad decade. Tenants rethought the relative advantages of having office space and moved home to do business
Insurance Agents - Real Estate Agents - Accountants - Lawyers - Network Marketers - Manufacturers Representatives - Photographers - Financial Planners - Plumbers - among many other occupations found that they were seeing so few customers "in the office" that the office had become high cost storage space.
When budgets are tight and return on investment is low the small office has become an endangered species
Having said that, working at home has it's drawbacks...
When the family Dogs are barking and the kids are all over you it's not ideal to be trying to work from home.
When you spouse doesn't understand that you can't "just talk" anytime they want to - working from home can be...challenging
When a prospect or client wants to meet with you in person - in an office - not a restaurant - you have a real problem...
Prospects perception is reality you know. If your prospective client perceives you are just a "little one person operation" you may never get a chance to get an audience with them. They'll do business with you over the barbecue grill in your backyard after they know - like & trust you...but if you never get to that point it's a moot point
Sometimes you just have to have an office!
There is a low cost compromise many don't realize exists. It's referred to as a "Virtual Office"
For a modest monthly rent $50 to $150 a month - depending on services and location - you can get...
An Office with Meeting rooms - usually 4 to 8 hours a months of private office space
A Location for UPS - FedEX and USPS delivery (ever miss a delivery you had to chase down?)
Fax machine - Scanner and Copy machine access
High Speed Wireless Internet Access

But they are one of many - some multi national - some nationwide - many local landlords who have realized that they have to adjust to the changing market
I love working from home - most of the time - but sometimes I really appreciate having an office to go to. Online search for "Virtual Office" and your zip code - and I think you'll find lot's of options
