Circles of Influence = Leveraging Relationships

I remember in the first years of building my insurance business I read business success stories voraciously.

One that I remember 30 years later was about a 1940’s wall street financier who was approached by a young business man asking for a loan.

The young man's idea was not “tried and tested” but the older businessman was intrigued that the idea, the business model, had a lot of potential and like a lot of successful people, the older, well-connected businessman liked to see others succeed.

Particularly when they reminded him of a younger him.

At the same time, the old guy had no personal interest in the business. It didn’t “fit” with what he was doing and he knew that it would be a distraction for him.

So when the young man came back, looking for a decision, hoping for a large investment what he got was a lesson, an invaluable one…

“So have you considered my proposition?” the younger man asked…

“Yes,” the old financier said and “come walk with me”...

For the next 15 minutes, the older man walked through the crowded exchange introducing his young apprentice to several dozen of his acquaintances. Nothing detailed, just lot’s of polite, complimentary introductions to many of the wall street “who’s who” of the day.

After the walk, the 2 men sat down and the older man told the younger man that HE wasn’t giving him the financing BUT that he now had something much more valuable than the money and that was the introductions he just been given, the connections that he had invested decades earning.

The young man was wise enough to be elated because with the endorsement he had a lifetime of leverage.

The was “The End”  of that story- but not the end of this lesson in observation.

Relationships with the right people can be “high octane” leverage for any business. Always be open to developing new ones, cultivating the ones you have and always be nurturing them and…

Always be “on the lookout” for people that have a “circle of influence” of their own.

Richard Greene of New Mexico Mortgage is a friend of mine in the mortgage business. I’m Richard’s friend in the insurance business. His clients/customers need what I have to offer. My clients/customers need what he has to offer. We send each other a lot of business and it grows every year.
