Social Media Reality check

I’ve been selling for 40 years…

Once upon a time, I used to make cold phone calls to people in the phone book. That was back in the day before “do not call” lists.

But you can’t do that anymore without violating laws that presumptively assume that consumers are too vulnerable to be able to resist that type of persuasion...

(PS in advance - have you noticed that the politicians that passed those do not call rules simultaneously exempted calls for politicians?) - but I digress…

Occasionally, in a past life, I actually knocked on a few doors and/or rang a few doorbells to introduce myself to someone who might someday need what I offered…

But when new laws were passed in most cities in America that ended. Lawmakers decided that consumers just couldn’t resist that “pressure”, they were just too vulnerable to the overwhelming hypnotic power of the door to door salesperson.

(Plus the fines that the government bureaucrats could levy could really help make up for tax collection deficits!) - but I’m digressing again…

You could email almost anybody that had an email address at one time and it was legal. But Google, Yahoo AOL and others figured out that diminished their ability to generate paid advertising. They lobbied legislators (on behalf of consumers they said) and soon it was illegal to send “unsolicited” emails…

My my...

  • When you listen to the free radio in your car you will hear advertising
  • When you watch free television you will see advertising.
  • Listen to a free podcast on iTunes or Stitcher lately? Notice the advertising?
  • Still get the newspaper - (for FREE like I do)? Lots of ads in there aren’t there?

“Free” Facebook and other social media sites have decided your personal promotions are “not worthy” of their standards because…

They want to sell advertising (can’t fault them for that)

Put up a message about your business - bad

Pay them to put up your same message - GREAT!!!

I got this email today that I found both annoying and revealing…

(this is slightly paraphrased) “ We received complaints on a message that you sent to 100's of your connections. This is not the way we want you to use our system as we view it as “spamming”. Please advertise via advertising or build a list and have people opt in to receive your offers. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.”

Social media is not your friend or your ally.

It’s just an advertising media.

Doesn’t matter what their URL or their tagline is be SURE to build your own list because when you are “playing in their sandbox”...

They own the box and they own the sand..

Build your OWN list. Need tools? I like Click Funnels and GetResponse

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

PS - Initiative Q is an attempt by ex-PayPal guys to create a new payment system instead of payment cards that were designed in the 1950s. The system uses its own currency, the Q, and to get people to start using the system once it's ready they are allocating Qs for free to people that sign up now (the amount drops as more people join - so better to join early). Signing up is free and they only ask for your name and an email address. There's nothing to lose but if this payment system becomes a world leading payment method your Qs can be worth a lot. If you missed getting bitcoin seven years ago, you wouldn't want to miss this.

Here is my invite link:

This link will stop working once I’m out of invites. Let me know after you registered, because I need to verify you on my end. I have NO idea if this will be a “big win” or a waste of time - but the concept is sound the people behind it have real business gravitas
