Lessons from the News of the Day

I confess. I’m a political junkie. I hit the button on the remote and go back and forth between Fox, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, BBC, CBN, and occasionally others…

From the news, I’ve learned that…

  • In the middle of a historically cold winter, global warming is about to kill us all
  • At a time that we have 2,000+ abortions a day in America, abortion is rare.
  • Stuff that costs lots of money is actually free.
  • Women are always right and men are always wrong.

In the midst of all that “stuff” try to keep your sense of humor and your grasp of perspective...

“News organizations” are businesses. They sell advertising and serve their advertisers first but that reality is not “new”...

Walter Cronkite was known for decades as America’s news “thought leader” but late in his life, we find that he took lots of privilege with his position. He privately agreed to never run a negative story about Pan Am airlines on CBS news (for example) because he got free air travel from them for decades.

My mom’s generation (in the 1950’s) used to be addicted to day time soap operas. Right or wrong, what passes as “News” these days may be closer to soap opera than real news and it’s reflected in both their declining ratings numbers and public trust.

The points of my rant are just this.

  • Don’t believe everything you hear/see/read without questioning the motives of those giving you the information
  • Always tell the truth because your reputation is priceless and dishonesty will cost you
  • If you too are addicted to the “news of the day” limit your consumption. Too much of anything is rarely good for anyone

Best wishes to you and yours in every part of your life
