Business owners need to regularly set goals for themselves. Some may be short term (add 5 new team members this week or sell 3 membership plans) while others will be long-term, as they’ll take more time to achieve (reach $4,000 per month in residual income). Each of us needs to set these goals so that we stay focused on what we want to accomplish. It’s also been shown that writing your goals down on paper and looking at them often will keep them at the forefront of your mind. Consider that old saying “Out of sight, out of mind.”
My goals are different from my dreams. My dreams are what my goals will help me achieve. My dream is to retire to a home with a wraparound porch, preferably overlooking a lake. There will be plenty of room for the grandchildren to stay when they come to visit. Family is the most important thing to me, so I want to be sure that I’ve got plenty of room for the family to spend lots of time with us.
The goals that I’ve set for myself are my blueprint for making that dream a reality. We all need a dream – and my dream probably won’t be the same as the next person. Your goals should be the steps you need to take to achieve that dream. All of us should be working towards making our dreams come true. Being in business for yourself means that you are in control of what you do each day to get closer and closer to that dream. Each goal that becomes a reality means that you are one step closer to your dream coming true.
Don’t give up on your dream by thinking that you’ll never get it. You are the one in charge of your life and what you do each day. It may take months or even years to achieve all of your goals. Keep in mind that you need to keep working, keep making progress, keep a positive outlook and you’ll get there! Your dream is worth it!

| | | | | | | | | This blog is an important one Cheryl for anyone who has dreams. I believe those short term goals are really important as they give you a sense of accomplishment, which helps you to keep working toward your long term goal. My personal mentor told me to post my goals by my desk so I see them every day. |
| | | | | Very good blog, Cheryl. As a business owner and a safety and health administrator, I am constantly opening my eyes, ears and mouth to learn and evaluate the current plans, maintain them through intelligent re-design, and surrounding myself with the team that will make it a reality. My analogy for this process is turning on a lamp so that the street & its signs can be read for progress toward the goals set. |
| | | | | Nice blog Cheryl. I agree with you that your goals and dreams are 2 different things and that being, your goal is the vehicle to dreams coming true. |
