Think back.....way back.....back to when you first started school. Remember those fat yellow pencils? The ones with the big eraser at the end? You were just starting to learn how to write your A-B-C's. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that your eraser probably got quite a work out back then, huh? Now, fast forward to the present. Your pencil has slimmed down, the eraser is smaller, too. But I bet that you still use that eraser from time to time. Nothing wrong with that - we all make mistakes. No one is perfect. The true test is if you are learning from your mistakes. Are you? No one likes to admit that they've made a mistake, whether it's in their personal life or their professional life. Some mistakes are more obvious (you just forwarded that eMail to everyone in the company, instead of to just your best friend) and others may be visible only to you (yes, you managed to wear one brown sock and one black sock today). Again, did you learn anything from this mistake? Perhaps double-check your emails before you hit that "SEND" button. Check your socks before you head out the door in the morning! The great thing about mistakes is that it gives us the opportunity to learn something that will enable us to not repeat that error again.
As a parent, it's my job to raise my children to be kind, respectful and productive members of society. Throughout their childhood, my children have made mistakes. We've taken each of those situations and used them as a tool to show them what they did, what they should have done and this has allowed them to see why they don't want to repeat that mistake. Although I can honestly say that there have been times where a mistake is repeated a few times before it really gets ingrained in their minds of what they should be doing. That's the joy of raising children. As a parent I get a great feeling inside when I see them doing the right thing because it means that they've learned and are benefiting from their mistakes. Even as an adult, I'm not done making mistakes. I just take more time to learn from what has happened so that I don't repeat them myself.
In business, we have the ability to learn not only from our own mistakes but from others as well. By taking the wealth of knowledge that is at our fingertips via the internet and personal connections, we can hopefully avoid a great many mistakes by careful planning and observations. Yet each one of us should be prepared to make a few mistakes along the way. Just be sure that you learn from each mistake so that you don't make it again. As a team leader myself, I am blessed to be able to help my team to grow their business by learning from my successes as well as my failures. I can let them know where I've achieved the higher levels of success as well as things to avoid doing, because they weren't productive. I enjoy the role of mentor because I love seeing those around me rise to new levels of achievement because of the discussions we've shared. I'm learning something new everyday - either by a positive or negative experience - and want to pass that knowledge onto my team members.
So...you may write with a pen instead of a pencil nowadays, but keep that pencil handy - you may need that eraser! To get information on becoming a member of my team, please visit cherylhess.xpressabo.com/opportunity.php
