One of the best things my family and I do every evening, as we are eating dinner, is play a game I came up with called “High/Low.” With three children, my husband and I try to keep up with the adventures in their lives, and give them an update on our own. It’s a simple question asked to each of us: What was the High and the Low of your day? By listening, we’re able to hear about everyone’s days and it starts amazing conversations, lots of laughter and sometimes frustrations are vented while we are all together at the table.
The same can be beneficial from a business standpoint. I am passionate about what I do with Xpress Healthcare. I enjoy being able to help people save thousands on their healthcare costs and more. I love that I’m able to enable people to earn residual income by working from home. Do I need to always be the one doing the talking? Absolutely not! I have found that I’ll attend networking meetings where we’ll go around the room and stand up to give a 30-second commercial about ourselves and our business. It’s a great length of time because it stays within the limited attention span most people have before they tune you out. You’re able to learn about others and then go back to the ones that you’re most interested in to get additional information.
One recent business owner I spoke with specifically stated that she dislikes when she’s talking with someone and there’s a continuous stream of conversation from them but little back and forth interaction. I’ll never forget what she called it: “Verbally throwing up in someone’s ear.” We are in business to not just have a single transaction/interaction with a person – we want to keep working with them for a long time. People want to do business with people that they trust. They want to get to know the person they’re doing business with – not just about the business itself. Very, very rarely do you have the corner on the market on a certain business. Chances are there may be any number of people doing the same thing that you’re doing. What sets you apart from anyone else? Why should people pick you?
Take the time to listen. It may be the thing that sets you apart from your competition – and it didn’t cost you a thing!

 | | Agree Cheryl! and as Ernest Hemingway said: "I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen". |
| | | | | I love that game, Cheryl. Would great for the grandchildren. You know who kids answer you when you ask them about their day.. Fair is the answer I always got. Didn't tell me much. Thank you for sharing this blog. |
| | | | | Well said Cheryl. Mastering the art of listening is a valuable tool to any business. Tweeted |
| | | | | Really good blog Cheryl. I'm not sure if it makes sense to others, but I believe there is a difference between listening and HEARING. When we're listening, are the words actually reaching our brain? To me, that is hearing, and too many of us don't truly hear, even when we seem to be listening. |
| | | | | I agree Cheryl that being a great listener will benefit you. I really enjoyed reading your post and look forward to the next one from you. ~Terri Pattio - MLM Coach/Mentor with a servant's heart |

| | | | | So true, Cheryl...In order to really build relationships that last, you have to really listen..."That's why God gave us two ears and ONE mouth." :) |
