The One Sentence Persuasion That Every Marketer Ought to Know.

Now before you think that it’s not possible to capture the essence of persuasion in one sentence, think again.

In just a few minutes I will reveal the “one sentence”, but don’t skip ahead whatever you do because that will only spoil the fun and you will miss the point.

But more on that later…

Persuasion is converting people – no, not to our way of thinking but to our way of feeling and believing. – Cavett Robert

(No this was not the one sentence persuasion – keep reading)

There are 5 key principles of persuasion that work on people and it is important that they do the following things:

1.    Encourage their dreams: Think of a time when someone actually encouraged your dream. How did that make you feel about the person? Parents, while good meaning, often discourage the dreams of their children. They want them to pursue more reasonable and safe options. So who do you think has more power – the person that encourages, or discourages your dream?

2.    Justify their failures: There is no better example than your modern day politicians. While they tell you to accept responsibility for your failures, they want to lay the blame for their mistakes elsewhere, assuring others that they are not responsible.

3.    Allaying their fears: Again you need to look at how politics is played to know that this is a great persuasion tactic. The support, and the stories used to pacify, but can they really tell us how to feel.

4.    Confirming their suspicions: This is used to exert major influence, especially as people want to believe and have their suspicions confirmed.

5.    Helping them throw rocks at their enemies: Everybody has an enemy, whether it be from within or outside. In trying to defeat that enemy - help may come from those who share the same enemy and together they become allies to defeat the common enemy.

There is another thing missing from this equation.

In fact it is crucial and glaring.

It’s HUGE.
