How To Develop A Purposeful Marketing Message - The 9W's

I have six honest servants; they’ve taught me all I know. Their names are what, why, and who, and when and where and how. ~ Robert Louis Stevenson.

If someone where to ask you to tell them about your business, program, product or service, what do you tell them?

Now think carefully, because this is not a trick question, neither is it time to whip out your elevator pitch.

I’m sure you’ve asked someone to tell you about their business before, only to have to listen to them ramble on and on, and 10 minutes later you’re even more confused and have no idea what their business is all about.

Sound familiar.

Well what if I told you that there are a set of 9 questions that you should answer so that you can develop a clear and purposeful marketing message.

Sam Horn in her book "Pop ! Create The Perfect Pitch, Title And Tagline For Anything" refers to them as the 9 W’s.

Let me share them with you.

W1. What am I offering?

W2. What problem does my idea or offering solve?

W3. Why is it worth trying and buying?

W4. Who is my target audience?

W5. Who am I and what are my credentials?

W6. Who are my competition and how am I different from them?

W7. What resistance or objections will people have to this?

W8. What is the purpose of my pitch?

W9. When, where and how do I want people to take action?

These are the keys to developing a clear and purposeful marketing message.

They will allow you to articulate your offering in a clear and intriguing way to any potential customers.

You should anticipate, address and answer  these 9 W’s in any and all of your communication with potential customers.

Doing this makes it easy for them to understand what you're selling and they will instantly know if what you’re offering will help them.

And if it does, they will buy. It’s that simple.

Just answer the 9 W’s
