Success: A Grown Up's Definition

In this fast track hectic life have you ever slowed down and wondered.... What am I doing here? You may always be on the move, busy coping with the various demands of different situations in life or trying to stay ahead of them. And if anyone asked you why you move at such a dogged pace, you would likely say, “Because I want to be a success in life”. However, a solid, hard and fast definition of a “successful life” can be elusive. You get only one chance to find out what your life is about. THIS IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL. It would be so dismal if in our end moments, we still have a wish list open, full of regrets. I want to share a mind encroaching exercise to help you discover what life is really about. Just a word of caution - do this with an open mind to better help things fall in place. Let’s start with what you perceive success in life to be: What exactly is success? "To freely bloom - that is my definition of success." ~ Gerry Spence Different people perceive success differently at different points in their lives. When you are younger you identify success with a high flying career and oodles of disposable income. On the flipside, as you mature you are more open to understanding the fallacy of success being the proportional to your social standing. In order to define if you have accurately arrived at the State of Success, you have to recognize it once you get there. Here are some good questions to ask yourself as you sculpt out your definition: In Walking in the Land of Success... What do I look like? How do I feel? The people around me - what are they doing and how are they feeling? What things do we do together? What types of thoughts do I have when I am alone? Who do I give to? How many times a day do I smile? What brings peace to my spirit and how often do I access that feeling? These questions should prime your internal Success Divining Rod. I'm sure you will think of more. Notice, my success questions are not related to the normal tangible stuff - where will I live, drive, travel? Those questions have their place but they are external trappings. I want you to be able to recognize and welcome success as an inside job - that way you have more control and more appreciation of your personal success journey. Wishing you All the Best, Coach Kim About Face Coaching
