Creating New Goals

If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first hour sharpening the ax. ~ Abraham Lincoln This quote by Abraham Lincoln sets the premise for a great goal setting exercise, or rather a working approach towards life itself. Creating new goals means one of two things: 1) Goals were never initially established or 2) The established goals were no longer working Goals should be so magnetic that they actually draw you to them. If your goals are not exciting, spicy, passionate... then really, what's the point? The start point for all of this of course is your own internal furnace. If there is no coal in there, it will be hard to start a fire! Realize it is important to sometimes just pause and think, go down memory lane and reflect on your journey thus far. How did you become the person you are today? How much of your success has been based on your values, beliefs, desires and aspirations? What has motivated you in the past? How can you harness that energy again? Change begins with you - but remember, it is very important to recognize not just what you are running away FROM, but even more specifically... what you are running towards. So.... what is it that you REALLY want from life? We are all goal-seeking animals. One of the worse things you can do is to mistake ACTIVITY for ACCOMPLISHMENT. Being busy is not the same as being productive and if you confuse the two states you'll end up wondering why you are not achieving much in life - this inventory will leave you feeling incompetent, impotent and insecure. So before you begin to outline your life goals, I want you to question yourself in every aspect possible. Leave no stone unturned; explore every nook and corner of your consciousness, especially those deep dark recesses of your mind. Take your time, as you don’t want to end up with wishy-washy goals you probably won’t even relate to a month from now. Think long term and think clear! Goals are something we co-create based on your relationship to reality. Take the SMART approach to set your goals: S = Specific M = Measurable A = Achievable R = Relevant T = Time-bound Use this acronym as a guideline to help you craft your new objectives and make them reachable and realistic. As you take time to look at your insides, know that I am looking forward to sharing another goal setting article with you, to help you move more directly along your path.
