Republic of Bulgaria

The wonderful country of Bulgaria was always famous for a variety of drinks. It is possible to carry to the most widespread: cognac and rake, black coffee — made according to east recipe, but we will stop on the well-known Bulgarian wines.

The Bulgarian wine deserved that paid it special attention. Among such well-known "wine" powers as Italy, France and Spain — Bulgaria takes the fourth place on quality of this divine drink.


Wine traditions of Bulgaria are estimated for centuries. The foundation was laid by Thracians who planted grapes on the southern and northern slopes of the Balkans, and it is necessary to tell that it turned out at them quite not bad. All famous Homer mentioned the Thracian wines in "Odyssey" and "Illiad". The prescription of production of wine is confirmed also by finds of archaeologists: find clay jugs which were used for storage of wine and ancient distilleries.

The climatic arrangement of Bulgaria provides huge advantage to cultivation of various grades of grapes, and traditional Bulgarian technologies of winemaking turn them into drink of gods and tsars. Presently art of winemaking in Bulgaria is developed well, the area of grape grounds in Bulgaria is 160000 hectares!!!

It is a little about traditions.

Some rituals which are connected with winemaking reached our days: still across all Bulgaria celebrate a holiday" Trifon it is killed" — it passes on February 14. Despite the orthodox name (Trifon is the famous Saint) — in Bulgaria it is rather possible to call this holiday pagan. This day there is a ritual cutting of grapevines. Wine-growers come to vineyards, cut off three branches and after that water the earth with wine — a symbol of good future harvest. After that select "the tsar of grapes" according to tradition, for it spun a wreath, and he made a detour on villages and arranged for all an entertainment. And in the next two days it was necessary not to use sharp objects, and special ceremonial bread was baked.
