BEST TIPS TO CHOOSING A PERFECT DOMAIN NAME FOR YOUR WEBSITE OR BLOG - PART ONE

Taffy wants to get a personal blog for her fashion business but she has a little problem and she doesn’t even know it is a thing to care about. She thinks having a name is all that really matters so she after much brainstorming with friends and family, she has decided to go with “Maltilimantaffyz”.

What did you say? I said “Malthilihmantaffyz”. What! How on earth do you want me to remember that? Not even your customers are going to remember that. Seriously, you are going to have it very hard getting both customers and potential customers to remember that name.

Don’t be like my friend who chose a name that is difficult to pronounce, hard to spell, almost impossible to remember and above all absolutely meaningless and of course definitely un-brandable. When choosing a domain name either for your business, personal blog, whatever you are getting it for,

Here are 10 tips you should consider.

1. Make it short Keep your domain name short. Gaebler an entrepreneur magazine conducted research and find that the top 5 websites have about 6 characters in their domain name. Consider names like Instantapartment dot com, , Urbanarla dot com and even Amazon

In choosing a domain name, I suggest you stay within the character count of 6 and 12, if it has to be more than 12 make it 2 simple keywords.

2. Simplicity is key It is not enough to keep your domain name short but you must also keep it simple. Your main objective is to get a name that is easy to remember and write. Go for names that are not only generic but brandable. See names like Amazon, Ebay, and Wakanow, they are generic native names that are brandable because they are unique. Simple is always better.

3. Use a less complex domain name extension. Your domain extension is the suffix that follows your domain name e.g dot com, dot org, dot co, dot info, dot net, dot me, and country-specific extensions such as dot eu, dot org dot eu(eu means European Union ), dot co dot za (South Africa), dot uk (United Kingdom) and lots more. It is always better you go for a dot com domain extension because it is by far the most popular.

Name five websites that come to mind and you will find about three of them ends with dot com. The problem with the dot com extension is that it is the most common extension. It is so popular that your choice domain name could already be taken. In that case, you may want to consider a change of name or pick a different extension. dot org, dot co, dot net, dot info are also popular extensions.

4. Avoid using hyphens and numbers How many times have you tried searching for a user name on Instagram and you don’t find it because it was punctuated with an underscore or a number? Imagine that Etsy's domain name is spelled E_tsy. You want to avoid using hyphens and numbers by all means in your domain name. they make it more difficult to type and memorize.

5. Use Relevant Keywords This is not necessary but it is worth considering. Choosing keywords will help your SEO ranking. I did a little searching on Google and realized that most people who provide Wordpress services or blog about Wordpress has Wordpress or at least “wp” somewhere in their domain. This is mostly because Wordpress is a keyword for many people who are looking for solutions to website related problems or are just searching on web design generally.
