To be successful online you must master the art of keyword selection. To create a search engine friendly website or blog, you must have quality content and that content must contain the best words or phrases that can be used to identify your brand and its products. Keywords are the words or phrases we use to search for a certain product or service online. The keywords you choose are important to the survival of your online business because you want web surfers to be able to easily find your website out of the hundreds or thousands of other sites that market the same type of products or services that you do. The first step in your keyword search strategy process is to brainstorm a list of at least 20 phrases you would use to search for items in your niche. If you can’t come up with 20 possible keywords, ask your family and friends what keyword they would use when searching for items in your niche. Once you have a healthy list, you will need keyword search software to see how well the keywords on your list perform as well as generate a list of related keywords that you may be able to use. The most popular keyword search tool online is from Google. Google keywords search tool is a free tool available for use online for anyone doing research on keywords. This tool will give you a good idea of which keywords are best for the optimization of your website or blog. Personally I think you should try to find 3-5 good keywords to start ranking your site for. You will want your main keyword to be the most popular keyword of your list with the least amount of competition. This is the keyword that will be easiest to start ranking for. The reason I say have at least 3 good keywords to optimize your site for is simple, three keywords give you much more writing material than just one and wouldn’t you rather have traffic coming in from three keywords sources instead of just one? Once you have chosen your keywords, you will want to create a page of content based on each one. If one of your keywords is “strapless cocktail dresses” then you should write an informational article on how to choose the perfect strapless cocktail dress for your body type and a follow up article on the different strapless designs and maybe a later article on the best strapless bras for strapless cocktail dresses; I’m sure you get the idea. Once you have written a lot of quality content for your site, you will want to focus on linking structure. Search engines love links, they examine both interior and exterior links to help them decide what is important to your visitors and how they can help web surfers find you easier. Quality links mean better ranking in the search engines. Interior linking is very, very simple. All you need to do is find a quality phrase or keyword on one page that easily relates to another page you have on your site and link the phrase with the URL of the other page. This creates a text link allowing visitors to move around your site much easier. The last, and probably the most important, piece of your SEO puzzle is the exterior links pointing to your website or blog. The top search engines, especially Google, focus heavily on the words or phrases that are used to link to your website from other web pages. It is very important that you exterior links are from “authority” sites. You want sites within your niche to link back to you. A relevant site’s link is worth much more than a site that has nothing to do with the niche you are in. For example, a link back to your strapless cocktail dress site from a party dress site is much more credible than a link back to your site from a running shoe website. Optimizing your site for great search engine rankings isn’t hard, but it does take focused determination. By following the easy steps above, you will be on your way to better search engine rankings for the most important keywords relevant to your niche.
