The Benefits Of Jumping Rope

(originally posted on my blog ) When exercising for fat loss, endurance or agility you can't go wrong with a little $6 piece of equipment called a jump rope. There are numerous benefits to adding a jump rope to your fitness regime, let's look at a few. When I first bought my jump rope it was to simply help with agility. Sure, you can perform jump rope movements and foot patterns without a rope but having a rope holds you accountable and pushes you to a higher standard. If you don't have to jump high enough and with the timing to clear the rope, you are cheating yourself of the purpose of doing jump rope drills. Jumping rope using various foot patterns while continually clearing the rope involves a high level of coordination, balance, timing, muscle strength, muscular endurance and cardivascular endurance. Jump ropes also helps to burn more calories when added to cardio workouts and as well as when used during rest periods during weight work. One of the best benefits of jumping rope is that it requires a huge caloric expenditure which will help you burn the fat even faster and really lean out. Jump rope segments are great to add to interval work. Remember, interval training is cardio conditioning only, varying your intensity in pre-determined lengths of work and recovery. I will talk more about interval training in another article. If you have the ability to warm up with movements that involve higher impact without increasing your risk of injury you can even use your jump rope to help you warm up and prepare for your workout. Many muscles are used when jumping rope, but the main focus is on your calves, core, upper back, shoulders and forearms. Jumping rope on a regular basis you will find that your vertical leaping ability has improved. This will especially noticable if you participate in sports such as basketball, vollyball, martial arts or any sport that require fast, powerful vertical leaps. If you really want to power up your workouts as well as quickly improve your vertical leaping ability, skip the little extra hope when jumping rope, do one jump per rotation of the rope with no extra little hopes. Many people also use their jump ropes by placing it in the floor in a straight line and either jumping forward and back moving from one end of the rope to the other or runing forward and back moving from one end of the rope to the other. Both moves can be done with a horizontal or vertical approach to the rope. For a few dollars you will have a piece of equipment that is versatile, easy to store and can go anywhere so you can even keep fit when you are on the road! For those of you with young children, another benefit to jumping rope is family time. I dare you, start jumping rope with your children and see just how long it takes before you are both laughing like crazy! Laughing burns calories too!
