Stephanie Paparo, 28, was at a WaWa convenience store in Delaware when a shopper unknowingly dropped two bundles of cash as he reached into his pocket while trying to buy water and a snack.
After he left the store, video footage shows a woman reaching down and grabbing the money. She then looked around the store to make sure no one spotted her, and left the scene.
The victim, Jim Duffy, had planned to use the money for a down payment on a new car, according to local broadcaster WWLP.
When the footage was broadcast on the local news, police received several anonymous tips that led them to Paparo. She was taken into custody on Tuesday night and authorities told the NBC affiliate that she has confessed to the crime.
The mom of three claimed she spent some of the money on her children and used the rest to cover overdue rent. She has has been charged with misdemeanor counts of theft and receiving stolen property and was released on $10,000 bail, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
“She saw it. She knew whose money it was,” Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood told the paper. “She didn’t make any effort to return the money to the individual. It’s a theft.”
What do you think? Does “Finders Keepers” still apply if you watch someone lose something and stand by and say nothing? I would say yes....she stole it. Only if she didn't know the rightful owner, would make finders keepers applicable.
