When it comes to sizing up Hostgator vs Godaddy hosting, the popular view is that Hostgator wins. But this is based on old aged opinions of early 2010. Has anything changed? Let’s investigate.

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is the budget hosting option and is recommended for small businesses receiving less than 2000 visitors to their website a month.

Economy Package

The Economy package starts at $4.99 per month. With this deal you get 24/7 support, hosting for 1 website, 100GB of storage, unmetered bandwidth, and free business email for 1 year.

Deluxe Package

The best value package is the Deluxe package, with resources for multiple sites. For $7.99 per month, you get everything in the Economy deal plus, unlimited websites, unlimited storage, and unlimited subdomains.

Ultimate Package

With Ultimate, $10.99 per month, it offers everything in the Deluxe deal, plus 2 x processing power and memory, Free SSL certificate for 1 year, free premium DNS, unlimited databases.

Maximum Package

For sites with high-resolution photography and video, choose the Maximum deal. Starting at $20.99 per month, you get the Ultimate deal plus 2 x more power and memory, 2 x maximum site visitors, and free SSL certificate for the full term.

All plans include 1-Click install of 125 free applications (WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, plus more), 24/7 security monitoring and DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service attack) protection, 1-Click purchase of additional resources (RAM, CPU power, plus more), 1-Click set up for Godaddy registered domains, 1GB database storage (MySQL Linux), and Flexible easy to use control panel.

Hatchling Plan

Being significantly cheaper than Godaddy, Hostgator offers The Hatchling Plan with hosting for a single domain, 1-Click installs Unmetered bandwidth, and a free SSL certificate starting at $2.75 per month.

Baby Plan

The Baby Plan allows you to have unlimited domains, 1-Click Installs, free SSL certificate, starting at $3.95 per month, with the option to host unlimited websites.

Business Plan

The recommended Business Plan, like the Baby Plan, allows you to have unlimited domains, 1-Click Installs, free SSL certificate, plus free Upgrade to Positive SSL certificate, free Dedicated IP, and free SEO tools, starting at $5.95 per month.

Hostgator is the cheaper option.

Godaddy’s Maximum Plan offers 2 times the power but at nearly 4 times the price of Hostgator’s Business Plan.

If you are looking for more speed don’t choose shared hosting.

Shared hosting is mainly for small businesses that want to have a web presence but are not expecting or optimizing their site for a high volume of visitors.

In other words, you are not planning on doing SEO or ranking in Google.

Most of your traffic is going to be traffic either from online or offline ads in the budget category.

Hostgator recommends the Business Plan but you may not need the Positive SSL certificate, the free Dedicated IP address, or free SEO tools.

If you have no idea what any of these items are and you are a small business that is content on having a basic website, my recommendation is the Hatchling Plan.

The reason I recommend this is managing one blog is more than enough work for most people.

Which is why I recommend starting off with hosting for one website.

If you want to build an authority website you can do that.

You can add subdomains to that website if you need to.

If you want more hosting for more websites or are planning to rank high in the search engines, choose a faster hosting plan, click on the live chat and ask the Hostgator Support team to migrate you over to a new plan.

It can be done in a few hours.

Then you can build whatever you want to.

Cloud Hosting

Hostgator’s Cloud Hosting prices have decreased significantly in that a Cloud Hosting Package is now affordable for entry-level small businesses.

What is Cloud Hosting?

“Cloud hosting is a way of storing data across multiple computers and accessing that data via a network connection like the Internet. As a whole, the cloud behaves like a single physical computer, with endless processing power and storage space.”-

And the benefit of Cloud Hosting is that if one server goes down, your site remains up as there are numerous servers that are hosting your website.

Hatchling Cloud

Hostgator’s entry-level Cloud Hosting plan starts at $4.95 a month for a single domain/site, with access to 2GB of RAM, access to 2 CPU Cores, local caching, you get a free SSL certificate, unlimited subdomains, and unmetered bandwidth and storage.

Baby Cloud

Hostgator’s recommended Cloud Hosting plan the ‘Baby Cloud’ offers a service for unlimited domains, access to 4 CPU Cores, access to 4 GB of RAM, local caching, free SSL, unlimited subdomains, unlimited parked domains, and unmetered bandwidth and storage starting at $6.57 p/month.

Business Cloud

With the Business Cloud, you get unlimited domain/sites, access to 6 CPU Cores, access to 6GB RAM, local caching, a dedicated IP, free SSL, unlimited subdomains, unlimited parked domains, and unmetered bandwidth and storage starting at $9.95 p/month.

Hostgator does daily automatic backups of your websites with its Code Guard service, with 1GB of storage, unlimited databases, unlimited files, protection for up to 5 websites, and the ability to restore your website 3 times a month.

The Sitelock service does a daily malware scan, a vulnerability scan, and blocks bot attacks.

You also get access to Google’s G Suite with G Mail, Hangouts, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and more.

Privacy Protection is also included which protects your personal privacy details from email spam, and identity theft.

Many people signing up for website hosting look for the cheapest option if they are a new small business and have little knowledge about website hosting and how Google ranks websites.

Getting entry-level shared hosting is not the best option because with images on your site that have not been optimized can make your website loading speed crawl.

If you do a website speed check with GTmetrix you can get your website speed analyzed.

Once you learn your website is slow and you read that Google penalizes slow loading websites, you can set about finding a solution.

If you are in business this is costing you money. Low search engine ranking, less visitors equals less revenue.

As recommended with the Shared Hosting, start with a single website.

Unless you are upgrading from a shared plan and are intending to create more websites and want faster hosting, then choose the option which agrees with the amount of power you need.

Obviously, the bigger your website is the more power you need.

If Hostgator’s Cloud Hosting Packages don’t seem to provide enough power for your large site, read on.

Godaddy has options for business sites that require significant power.

But with cloud hosting being 2 times faster than shared hosting you can fix your speed problem.

If you don’t know what the tech specs mean, it doesn’t matter. If you know about personal computers, you will be able to Google the specs and understand what they mean.

Godaddy’s Cloud Hosting Services

Godaddy decided to shut down their cloud hosting operation at the end of 2017 and does not offer cloud hosting to its customers.

WordPress Hosting

Hostgator’s WordPress Cloud Hosting

WordPress as of March 2018 Technology Survey Firm reports that WordPress powers 30% of websites on the web.

This may be the reason that Hostgator has supplied the market with WordPress Cloud Hosting. The benefit of WordPress Cloud Hosting is that it is 2.5 times faster than regular hosting. This is due to a Content Delivery Network (CDN), cloud hosting, and multiple caching layers.

Starter Plan

The starter plan services one website, permits 100K website visits per month, 1GB for backups, and offers a free SSL certificate, starting at $5.95 per month.

Standard Plan

There isn’t a great deal of difference between Hostgator’s recommended Standard Plan, only that they host 2 sites instead of one, 200K visits per month, 2GB of backups, and a free SSL certificate, starting at $7.95 per month.

Business Plan

With the Business Plan you get hosting for 3 sites, 500K visits per month, 3GB of backups, and a free SSL Certificate starting at $9.95 per month.

You may decide to pass this option up but Hostgator is offering a solution to a widespread WordPress problem of many websites loading too slowly.

Godaddy’s WordPress Hosting

With Godaddy’s WordPress Hosting you get access to thousands of free themes and plugins, a free domain with the annual plan, free daily backups and 1 Click restore, one-click migration tool, 99% uptime, temporary domain name, 24/7 support, free (1) Microsoft Office 365 email with the annual plan.

Basic Package

The Basic package hosts 1 website, has 10GB storage and offers daily backups with 1-Click restore starting at $5.49 per month.

Deluxe Package

Starting at $8.99 per month, the Deluxe package offers everything in the basic package plus, an SEO plugin, 1-Click staging site, SSH/SFTP access.

Ultimate Package

The Ultimate plan gets you everything in the Delux package, plus, hosting for 2 websites, ongoing malware scan, with an SSL certificate included.

Developer Package

Godaddy’s Developer package gives you everything in the Ultimate plan, but you get hosting for 5 websites, and an SSL certificate included.

Godaddy has discovered that their users want WordPress support and now they deliver this with their Premium WordPress Support.

As Godaddy shut down their cloud hosting at the end of 2017, their WordPress hosting isn’t hosted in the cloud or even through VPS(Virtual Private Server) hosting, which means it doesn’t have the speed or power that Hostgator’s WordPress Cloud Hosting has.

But as many WordPress customers are new to WordPress website creation what they do have is that they offer these customers Premium WordPress Support.

These customers get answers to their questions from a specialized WordPress team.

If you are new to WordPress, the Godaddy option may be the best option for you.

Having said that, Hostgator offers 1-Click installation of WordPress and live chat for anyone with problems.

WordPress is one of the easiest to manage Content Management Systems (CMS), but you need to locate training on how to use it.

This is something neither website hosting company offers.

But there are videos on YouTube and online courses on Udemy.

The biggest problems you will have is with the WordPress menus, themes, and getting your website to load fast enough.

Once you have this sorted out everything will fall into place.

Business Hosting

Godaddy offers its business customers business hosting and they report it is lightning fast for loading photos and videos and is recommended for e-commerce sites that don’t want to lose sales because of slow loading.

Launch Package

Launch, the entry-level plan, starts at $24.99 per month and includes 60GB of storage, 2GB RAM, 1 CPU, Unmetered traffic, Unlimited websites and databases, and Standard SSL Certificate.

Enhance Package

Enhance, the package recommended for high traffic WordPress and Joomla sites starts at $32.99 per month and includes 90GB of storage, 4GB of RAM, 2 CPUs, Unmetered traffic, Unlimited websites and databases, and Standard SSL certificate.

Grow Package

Grow, is recommended for advanced e-commerce sites like Magento, starting at $43.99 per month, with 120GB of storage, 6GB of RAM, 3 CPUs, Unmetered traffic, Unlimited websites and databases, and Standard SSL certificate.

Expand Package

The package recommended for photography and heavy resource site is Expand, starting at $64.99 per month, with 150GB storage, 8GB of RAM, 4 CPUs, Unmetered traffic, Unlimited websites and databases, and Standard SSL certificate.

GoDaddy’s Business hosting to me does not seem to be a good option. When compared with Hostgator’s Cloud Hosting you are getting less power and less storage and are paying inflated prices.

It’s faster than shared hosting but you are overpaying for a limited product.

They report that you get the power of VPS (Virtual Private Server) without needing to be technically minded.

Final Recommendation

If you want to get started with creating a website and there is too much technical speak for you to take in because the world of WordPress and website hosting is new to you, and computers are still fairly new to you.

But you want to create a website.

Get Started Quickly and Easily With Wealthy Affiliate

The easiest way to get started with a WordPress website is to join Wealthy Affiliate.

They will help you get up and running with a WordPress website in 5 minutes.

On their platform, they have a simple step by step videos, and written instruction to guide you.

And to assist you with any queries you have, there is a technical support team to fix any mistakes and assist you.

Domain names are reasonably priced and fast Amazon web hosting is included in the membership fee.

With a large selection of themes and all the needed plugins installed for you, their quality web hosting will help you get up and running with your website quickly and easily.

Hostgator vs Godaddy

The next easiest route (if you don’t want to join Wealthy Affiliate) is to make a choice between Hostgator or Godaddy and click on the live chat, tell them you are interested in getting a website hosted and that you need a domain name.

They will set things up for you (but they won’t install WordPress for you, nor will they give you any free themes and plugins) and email you with the details that include your username and password, and other details you need to save.

You will have to navigate to cPanel and set up email addresses and install WordPress. As well as managing your password and username.

Knowledge of Hosting

For people that understand all the details about shared hosting, cloud hosting, and WordPress Hosting, and you are thinking of getting a website set up with WordPress.

And you have done the necessary courses and understand how to install WordPress, but are undecided as to which hosting package to get.

My recommendation would be to choose Hostgator’s Cloud Hosting.

With Cloud Hosting, you have the protection of have numerous servers hosting your site, which means your site won’t go offline if one server fails.

You also have the power to ensure that your site loads quickly as this is one of Google’s ranking factors.
