My recent visit to - The Victoria Falls - Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders!
I am following the track once cut through the rainforest by David Livingstone's hobnailed boots where I sense a latent excitement. Two long years has passed since my last visit to the precipice, and still I know exactly what is about to hit me! The force of the Victoria Falls is profound, evident even before you reach the tumbling torrent. Its clouds of billowing spray can be seen rising like steam on the horizon.
Reaching the Devil's Cataract viewpoints, I am humbled by the Falls booming presence. I stare into the cascading downpours and listen to thundering echoes and observe the colours of the rainbow before my eyes. Its energy is obvious and totally encompassing, breathtaking and a magnificent experience.
My driver and tour guide in charge of me today is "Jameson"who is busy talking about the curios at the curio park we are visiting on our way to my Safari Lodge and saying do not buy anything with Zimbabwe dollars, they are useless he says, but use USofA dollars. The Zimbabwe dollars it seems to have been replaced by the American greenback and the South Africa Rand currencies rule the land. "Oh" says Jameson, "close your windows or the baboons will steal everything!" I have to laugh!
We make our way to the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, my home from away from home for a few days, the lodge is decorated in fine ethnic furnishings and bright cheerful colours and the bustle of the other tours arriving. Much excitement and activity. I am delighted to be here!
We have included a few days in the Victoria Falls as part of our new Zambezi itinerary and am amazed at how well maintained everything is on the Zimbabwean side, I am also surprised at how safe it feels. What has struck myself are the numbers of visitors. In my conversation with the management of the Lodge I have found it interesting to learn the lodge's occupancy rates have risen dramatically since the last 5 years. The 34 room Ilala Lodge, which sits very close to the waterfalls was also very busy. I was interested to find out how the 105 year old bastion of British Colonialism, the Victoria Falls Hotel doing? I arrived to find its terrace packed with international visitors tucking into high tea served on three-tiered Edwardian Cake Stands - I am amazed and have a good laugh and settle in myself, the chocolate cup cakes are delicious! I simply could not resist!
The future looks very bright.
I am confident, optimistic and have positive ambitions for tourism in Zimbabwe and Zambia. I highly recommend this journey. Flights from London, Heathrow, return on British Airways to Livingstone, Zambia were very reasonable in price. We were met at the Livingstone Airport and drove across the border to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe where we stayed for 4 nights. Next stop.....Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe for 4 nights on a luxury houseboat to do tiger fishing and take photographs of the Fish Eagle. Returning same route to Livingstone, Zambia where we stay for 2 nights before returning home to England. A total of 10 nights, staying on Bed and breakfast basis at the hotels and Lodges but the houseboat is all fully inclusive even the fishing rods and bait is included! What more do you want?
If you are interested to visit this magnificent region and would like to receive the detailed itinerary and prices, then please do not hesitate to contact myself by visiting our website or you can email myself directly at: info@holidaytoafrica.co.uk
Looking forward to welcoming you on this adventure.
Cheers, Shaza.
