The Benefits of Vitamin D

Many of us know the need for vitamins and minerals in our diet, and many nutrients come from the foods we eat. Eating nutrient dense foods including protein, fruit, vegetables, legumes and other food sources will give us much of the nutrition we need in our diets. Often we do not eat the way we should due to the fast paced, and fast food lifestyle we have been accustomed to. Often we tell ourselves we don’t have time to cook so we grab something at the local fast food restaurant. Years ago I read an article that indicated when you eat fast food or food with little nutritional value, often we stay in a constant state of hunger. We are full but the body is not getting adequate nutrients. Our bodies will let us know when we are nutrient deficient. Often we have cravings for certain foods or are hungry a few hours later because we fed our bodies but we did not feed our bodies with the right nutrients. Then the vicious cycle begins. We continue to eat more and more due to cravings which often result in weight gain. Sometimes you may feel fatigued or have low energy and this can often be attributed to poor nutrition. In some ways our bodies are “starving” for proper nutrition. Recently I had a craving for orange juice that was incessant. I knew I must have been low in vitamin C and when I drank several glasses during the week the craving stopped. Our bodies will tell us what we need if we just listen.

One of the most important vitamins for good health which is sometimes overlooked is vitamin D. Often as a child your parents told you to drink your milk so you would grow with strong bones and teeth. There are numerous sources of vitamin D besides milk. These sources include lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, dairy products, mushrooms,  and various other food sources. Vitamin D gives us strong bones and teeth because it helps the body absorb calcium. Researchers are finding out that vitamin D helps to regulate the immune system, an inhibitor of cancer cell growth, it stimulates your pancreas to make insulin, helps to normalize blood pressure and has other numerous benefits for the body. Deficiency in vitamin D has been linked to weight gain, depression, heart disease and various cancers such as colon and breast cancer. Vitamin D is so important to the body that it makes the vitamin itself but only after being exposed to the sufficient sunlight. People in southern climates get more sunlight than people living in northern climates particularly during the winter season. Also people with darker skin absorb less sunlight then individuals with lighter skin, therefore often resulting in a high rate of Vitamin D deficiency in people with more melanin in their skin.

Eating your way to good health is always the best approach. We should try to get as many nutrients we can from the foods we eat. But often due the growing methods used today, use of chemicals in growing our food, preservatives, and our own cooking methods depletes these nutrients. People should have what I call “health insurance” but it is not the type you are thinking about. Despite our best intentions sometimes our diets don’t supply everything we need to be optimally healthy.
