Beyond The Comfort Zone

Those that tend to go beyond the comfort zone on a regular basis often times find that it is expanding.  Where as those that rarely stray from their routine may be even more restricted.

"The comfort zone otherwise known as "Corley Syndrome"[1] is a behavioral state within which a person operates in an anxiety-neutral condition, using a limited set of behaviors to deliver a steady level of performance, usually without a sense of risk.[2] A person's personality can be described by his or her comfort zones. A comfort zone is a type of mental conditioning that causes a person to create and operate mental boundaries. Such boundaries create an unfounded sense of security. Like inertia, a person who has established a comfort zone in a particular axis of his or her life, will tend to stay within that zone without stepping outside of it. To step outside their comfort zone, a person must experiment with new and different behaviors, and then experience the new and different responses that occur within their environment."   -From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here is a great graphic for helping us visualize the dynamics involved in our developmental efforts.

Three Zones

  • Comfort Zone

  • Optimal Performance Zone

  • Panic Zone

Surrounding that we think we have control over (like our home area) tend to be predominantly in our comfort zone.

Venture out and encountering new things or enhancing existing skills tends to put us into the optimal performance zone.

When venturing too far or too fast outside of the optimal performance zone we are more vulnerable and this additional risk creates a panic zone.

Most people who drive automobiles can relate to these distinctions and driving is a good example of how we are often slipping back and forth between these zones in a way that results in moments when one zone may overlap another area.

Many of us stretched out of our comfort zone the very moment we made the decision to build an online business.  Even if we had traditional business skills we discover that there are different tools and resources that can be applied in our efforts to maximize our results.

When people venture out only to discover that they are quickly into the panic zone the tendency is to retreat back to the comfort zone... and it might be a while before there is another attempt!  This graphic may more closely correlate to how the majority of us feel about our environment.  It shows that proportionally we tend to see a lot more risk, and that the area between our comfort zone and feeling our anxiety rising is a fairly thin band.

I tend to think of the learning/optimal zone expanding based on our willingness to apply what we have learned... applied knowledge can be a very powerful thing!

When we accept the status quo even when challenged with information that indicates that there could be a better way then we limit the potential for maximizing value.

With this program we can step into that optimal zone only to discover that it is still perfectly comfortable too!  Click HERE to learn more.
