Because It Is A Better Way

While people should certainly be allowed to go about things in whatever fashion suits them, as long as it is not causing harm to others, it can also be good to show "best practices" because if it is a better way of doing something then you are providing benefit and value.

An example of this is how to peel a banana.  There are actually several options.  And it will not make too much difference to the development of civilization if my preferred method is not adopted by the rest of the world, yet it IS a better way.

We learn many of our behaviors from watching those around us.  And once a behavior has become ingrained by repetition it becomes a habit.  Habits can serve us well, yet they also have the power to enslave us to doing things the same way we have always done them ... because, "that is the way it is supposed to be done"!

Have you read The 100th Monkey story by Ken Keyes, Jr.?

In this story Mr. Keyes shares the notion that better ways of doing things may be slow in "catching on" until the number of those doing it the better way reaches a critical mass and it then becomes a part of a universal consciousness that is somehow then available to almost everyone and is adopted as the primary behavior.

Universal consciousness might be too big a subject for me to tackle in this short article, yet even without fully understanding how it works, it connects us in ways that allow us to be part of the larger community.

You might be wondering how any of this can possibly apply to online business building? Well, in the new emerging economy the level of consciousness is increasing on the viability of making money by working online.  Those that have clung to the old ways of doing things in the traditional employment model are becoming increasingly aware that there are options available now that did not seem workable four or five years ago.

The ability to work when and where you choose as long as you have a computer and a connection to the internet is allowing people both economic and time freedom that are not readily available in the old corporate system.

Is working online truly a better way of doing things?  Well, there will always be room for choice.  And there are some things like manufacturing and physical product delivery that will be slower to transition in the new economy.  But the "soft people skills" that are so relevant to sales and marketing are also ideally suited to working online.

For example, I used to work with a financial services company and would physically travel to meet with people in person.  It is still a highly effective thing to do and provides a lot of value to all parties involved.  Yet the downside is getting people to commit to an appointment (cold calling in person is even more difficult), and working through unexpected disruption to agreed upon schedules.  At one point I was spending as much as 80% of my time and efforts in the "prospecting" activities and only 20% of my time presenting products and services.  The inefficiencies of that system are very high.

Many of those products and services are now available online.  With the ability to do conference calls, webinars, workshops, hangouts, etc. it is possible to devote much more of my time to actually talking with people ... and much less being stuck in traffic and in waiting rooms.

The best case scenario may still be in person meetings, but the ability of the internet to compress time and space and thereby allow for much greater results in a shorter time span makes it a better way of doing things (on balance) for many of us.

Go ahead, try peeling that banana from the opposite end of the stem and see if it truly is a better way.  It is only a matter of time until it becomes part of the universal consciousness and everyone will be taught to do it that way!

All the best to you.
