I just noticed that I haven't written a blog in a few days. I thought to myself, " OK Maura, what is the topic of today's blog going to be". And I thought, well the last one I did on leadership; how about switching things up a bit. So here goes.
The last few days, I have been on a project. I decided since my last years' swimsuit went MIA (I have no idea) I would make a new one. I thought to myself. OK, I have plenty of material (left over from my mother) and I could do this. I thought it would be breeze. Well, it did take me three days to complete it, but I am happy with the results.
As I was making this without a pattern (yikes), it took a little longer than I thought. I kept at it. I made many mistakes. Thank goodness for my seam ripper. Wouldn't it be nice if you could rip away all your mistakes? My daughter would drop in from time to time to see my progress. She would make some suggestions, and I would usually follow those suggestion. She is only 13, but has a good eye and if she doesn't like something, she lets me know.
Several times during my sewing project, I had to make alterations. I thought, OK how is this going to work? The picture was clear in my mind of how my bathing suit was going to turn out. It took a few more steps than anticaipated, but the end product is very close to that image in my mind.
As I was furiously sewing this morning as I was hemming the suit, the material was not cooperating. I told my myself to calm down, this is supposed to relax me. I decided to relax, and finsihed it with a smile.
Although, I never made a bathing suit before, I was not going to tell myself that I could not do it. I have an awesome machine that I just got for Christmas, all I had to do was sew away. And so I did.
There is a moral to this story: Don't become overwhelmed by the task in front of you. Just take one step at a time. You will get there and get your project done. It helps if you have someone supporting you along the way (Thank you, Susan). Try and take time to do fun projects in between your work schedule if you can, you'll be glad that you did.
To quote Jack Nicholson in the Shining, "All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy".
