One in three Americans have this and don't even know it. What is it? It is called Metabolic Syndrome. Metabolic Syndrome is not a disease, but a combination of risk factors that can predict and precede diabetes and other risk factors.
There are five risk factors that can determine is you have metabolic syndrome.
Risk #1-Measure your midsection, If you are a female and measure over 35 inches around your navel, for men it is 40 inches around your navel; or you have a BMI score of 30 or more.
Risk #2 - A simple blood test can check your triglyceride level. It should not be over 150 mg/dl.
Risk #3- HDL Chroesterol For women it should not be less than 50 mg/dl for men it should not be less than 40 mg/dl
Risk #4- Blood Pressure should not be high. 135/85 + mmhg puts you at risk.
Risk #5- Blood sugar 100 + mg/dl. This factor alone means that you are prediabetic.
What is causing this epidemic?
A combination of high sugar, high carbohydrate diets and a lack of physical activity.
The average American intake of sugar of up to one pound of sugar every two days.
Blood Sugar 101 Your body changes the food you eat into glucose. Glucose is the fuel your body runs on. When glucose enters your blood, your body releases insulin to usher glucose out of your blood into your cells to be used as energy. But as we eat foods like carbohydrates that are already high in sugar, we must find a way to burn some of that sugar off.
If we are not able to do this, this can lead to insulin resistance, excessive body fat, and impaired blood sugar metabolism. There are critical factors for healthy blood sugar:
- Control and balance blood glucose levels
- Maintain healthy insulin levels
-Optimize healthy insulin levels
