Something More Interesting About My Ancestry

My last blog I told you about the famous and well respected people that are my ancestors.
General George Gordan Meade was one of them. The other was George Meade Easby Great Great Grandson to General Meade. Master of the Baleroy Mansion. One of the most haunted Mansions in history.
Then there is Parker Stevenson an actor born Richard Stevenson Parker in 1952. He was born in Philadelphia Pa. A place where the Meades' were a plenty.
I was reading so much more about the family tree last night. I saw that General Meade's Father was named Richard Meade. He also served as a soldier for our country.
My Grandmother Monona Meade gave me an article written back in the 80's in a Cocoa, Florida newspaper. It said that General Meades Father, Richard Meade gave the US Government 5 million dollars to buy Florida from Spain.
George Meade Easby back in the 80's was 60 and he said that the 5 Million was never paid back and should be paid to him to care for Baleroy Estate and he was also sharing the rest with his distant cousins. I am one of them. The estate would have been paid 5 million plus interest of 300,000 a year from the year 1819. The State itself was collateral for the loan. But George Meade Easby said he couldn't see himself being landlord of Florida.
We are not to far off the tree as far as General Meade. He is a cousin of mine. My Grandfather that I never got to meet was 13 years older than my Grandmother and she is 88. His name was Merton O. Meade. He was a Nephew of General Meade. So then we are very close to the Baleroy Estate and the ancestry story of the buying Florida from Spain.
What interests me the most is not that I could have had a lot of money and who knows maybe someone else will continue the fight to win back the loan. But what I am most fascinated by is the Baleroy Mansion being one of the most haunted places in history. I am wondering if I could go there someday and see it. It is located at 111 West Mermaid Lane in Philadelphia PA.
I'd like to research more about my family tree and learn everything there is to know about my family. Maybe one day when I am not so busy I will buy some time on ancestry.com.

| | |  | | Dawn, that haunted house does sound like a great place to spend the night and you should definitely make the time to do it if you can. As far as retrieving your loan from the government, you may find it easier to get into Fort Knox but good luck with it. |
