As a part of the  "How To Use QR Codes Effectively” series, we are taking a look at two maybe even three companies that have been successful in effectively bridging the use of the QR Code technology with the Smartphone user.

As a small business owner I do not want to spend time and money on a passing phase. I am looking for hard evidence that the technology is going to be worthwhile and be around for a long time.

With bigger companies investing in to the Apps and QR Code, it tells me that they must believe in the tecnology and I at least need to investigate what the benefits may be to my business and to the Smartphone user. Today, we take a look at Walmart.

“Pay with any iOS or Android smartphone, any major payment type and at any checkout lane – all through the Walmart app”

Bentonville, Ark., Dec. 10, 2015 –

In this Press Release Walmart explains why they introduced the strategy, “The Walmart app was built to make shopping faster and easier,” said Neil Ashe, president and CEO of Walmart Global ecommerce.

“Twenty two million customers actively use the Walmart app each month and it ranks among the top three retail apps in the Google and Apple app stores”

First the user must download the Walmart App by scanning a QR Code onto their Smartphone. In literally seconds the App is downloaded and now can enhance the users shopping experience with features that only the App can provide such as, “checking in to pick up an online order at a Walmart store, refilling pharmacy prescriptions and finding an item’s store location”

With the App the checking out using Walmart Pay happens in three easy steps:

  1. Open: Visit any register, open the Walmart app and choose Walmart Pay. Activate the camera.
  2. Scan: At any time during checkout, simply scan the code displayed at the register. Walmart Pay is now connected.
  3. Done: Associate scans and bags the items… and it’s done. A receipt will be sent to the app and can be viewed at any time.

Walmart dives into mobile payment with its unique Walmart Pay system based on QR code technology

 Part 2 published

“The simplicity and ease of Walmart Pay comes not only from how it works, but also in how it’s been built,” said Daniel Eckert, senior vice president, services, Walmart U.S

“We made a strategic decision to design Walmart Pay to work with almost any smartphone and accept almost any payment type ~”

In theory, this is all good, but does it work in practice? It does! Walmart, one of the largest retail store companies in the world launched a new mobile payment system called Walmart Pay, which uses the full power of QR codes to allow customers to experience a smoother shopping experience.

How does it work?

To use Walmart Pay, customers have to download the app and choose a payment method. If they already have the app, they won’t have to re-enter their information. Once that’s done, at the cash register, customers simply have to take out their phones and scan the QR code, which is connected to their product baskets. Easy as pie!

Walmart Pay is one of the many successful QR code practices that exemplify why the technology is relevant.

Let’s reflect on this: phones have become smart.

We acknowledge this. It is part of our daily lives. We can access the web and do many of our chores with them.

Now, the link between our digital interface and the real world is possible, bringing forth infinite and inventive uses.

The number one tool that bridges this gap is the QR code.

To be continued …
