Marketing Battle Plan For November


The fragrances of November are so memorable as well as the activities of the month. Thanksgiving is the most traveled for holiday of the year. If you are in need of a good laugh, the movie, “Trains, Planes and Automobiles” with Steve Martin trying to get home for Thanksgiving is hilarious.

Here we are once again, strategically laying out plans to bring customers to our stores or to our online shopping experience. It is a magical time of the year for everyone and expectations are high as always.

Black Friday in 2016 was a magical one indeed … over 680 million in sales by 3 pm that day. Smartphones as the winner, claiming 50% of the web traffic in sales and with an astounding 40% of all sales were from Smartphones.

The following Cyber Monday was the biggest online day sales in history for the same reasons. So, that does give us a strong hint as to what lies ahead for the coming holiday season.

The base of this month to month battle plan comes from Offering free business consulting, education and mentoring, SCORE has served America for over 50 years. You will find their suggestions in the light blue and mine in black.

Send out your monthly newsletter. If you like, repeat one of the calls  to action from earlier this year or come up with one of your own.

This newsletter should not just include your November sales and events, but a peek into December’s as well. Note the date that you will be sending your information out for December and maybe a hint of something special for your subscribers this year.

You may even want to combine your newsletter for this month for both November and December with another one sent out for December and January in early December.

You could have a coloring contest, a Santa’s workshop, breakfast with Santa, a toy or food drive … the possibilites are endless.

Work your social media plan. This is one of the biggest shopping months – your customers should be thinking about holiday gifts by now, and Black Friday is near the end of the month.

Set a promotional plan, but be sure to still keep it to 20% of your content, and make the other content fun and engaging for your customers, giving thanks to them during Thanksgiving!

Work the coordinated plan you set up with your friendly local businesses

Even if you are an online business, I encourage you to team up with a local business and contribute to your local community. For example, we lost our only office supply business here in town, which was a big corporation.

The local hardware picked up the slack for the community and offers a lot of the basic supplies with an online service for all supplies. They offer professional printing and even email service where you can attach documents and they will print out for you.

I want them to remain in business because of the convenience so I support them as much as possible. I approached them for a possible partnership for the holidays. (I also want more visibility in the community.)

We have agreed to enter a float for the coming Christmas Parade here in town that will represent my business and theirs. We are splitting the cost 50 - 50 and both contributing manhours. We will both man the float during the parade. It is my first so I am very excited.

Go through your client list again and reassess all your clients. Put them in the A, B, and C lists as appropriate. For the C-listers who haven’t responded to your attention, seriously consider dumping them in December. They’re probably 80/20 cases.
