Today I had a funeral for my car, a silver 2001 Honda Ex coupe.
I couldn’t bring myself to take a post-mortem picture of her wrecked body with the whole right side crushed.
Not only was the car crushed, but I was too when the insurance company told me that the cost to repair the damage on the car from my accident was more than the current book value of the car. Therefore, they were writing off the car as a “total loss”.
The car had something like 120,000 miles on her and I had assumed I’d get another 100,000 miles at least. Hondas run forever. I admit, the car ran beautifully, but other things were starting to go–the power doors, for instance, worked sporadically.
I went to get my belongings out of the car and I felt very sad. I felt as if I were losing a friend. I regretted not having anyone close to me to console me in my grief.
I bid the car goodbye and thanked her for being a good friend and serving me well. (I did this silently of course or the people at the body shop would have thought I was loony toons :) )
I know, some people will say it was only a car, but the Native Americans say everything has consciousness, even things we consider inanimate objects. This car, after all, sacrificed herself so I could stay alive.
Then I walked away and left her behind for the wreckers.
I left with two takeaways.
1. I was leaving behind a piece of my life because it was time to transform and go on to bigger and better things. The car represented an unhappy time. I had to let it go and move on.
2. The Buddhists say attachment is the source of all suffering. I had to let the attachment go.
Namaste, little Honda. May your spirit merge with the Light.
