Why do we work 80% of our lives only to retire and enjoy 20% of our time and fortune? Between school education and our careers we spend about 60 plus years working, and then when we retire, we only get to enjoy another 20 or so years spending the money we worked so hard to earn. It doesn’t have to be this way. When I started a new business in my 40's, someone told me, “the only advice I can give you is make your next career something you feel passionate about and really enjoy doing.” After I ditched the idea of starting up school and got back closer to reality, I started my own business. If everyone followed this advice and found a career or started a business they were passionate about, those 40 years of hard work might not feel so much like a job, but more like a hobby or interest that they are getting paid for. Now instead of considering your job, a job; you can enjoy a greater portion of those 40 years, doing something you really like. As an entrepreneur, you have already decided to venture out on your own. That’s half the equation. The other half is moving into a business area that you enjoy and are passionate about. Feel privelaged that you have the desire and drive to do something independently, many people aren’t comfortable working for themselves, and prefer the false security of working for someone else in a large organization. Start by making a list of your interests, hobbies and even the aspects of your career you truly enjoy. Then scan the list and see what potential businesses could be created around these interests. For example, if you like sports and travel, maybe you could start a specialty travel agency for exotic sports tours. You get the idea. In some cases you might find that the new career isn’t as financially rewarding as your existing position, but I would argue that it’s worth the trade off in taking a reduction in income to be happier in your career for 40 years. Your call. I know it’s not the same as retiring early, but it might be the next best thing.
Entrepreneurial, Self- Motivated Person!!!!

| | | | | Absolutely right Sharon. It's much more fun to work for yourself than to work for someone else. The rewards of entrepreneurship are many! thanks for sharing. |
| | | | | Yup right on!
Once you find a passion you'll not work a day in your life.
I followed the old advice of get a good education, work hard for 30-50 and out and feed the world with your pension.
Except like many I did not make 30-50 at IBM.
And l am actually finding freedom in my fifties online and off. |
