ORAC –What it Means & What it Does
ORAC is the acronym for (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). Now in laymen terms, ORAC is simply a test tube analysis which measures antioxidant levels of foods and chemical substances. Foods with a high ORAC scores equate to foods high in antioxidants. Using ORAC scores as a barometer, higher scores means food becomes better at helping fight diseases such as heart disease, cancers, etc.
The power for something to absorb or eliminate oxidative free radicals is a great thing. Vitamins A, C, and E are all considered antioxidants, such as those found in fruits, vegetables ... and of course, cacao – one of my favorite treats, CHOCOLATE!
Foods with high ORAC scores protect our cells from oxidative damage. Oxygen radicals are chemicals naturally formed inside the body through the process of oxidation. Everyday functions like digestion and physical activity produce oxygen radicals too. Daily exposure to polluted air, rancid food and oxidizing radiation from the sun and electrical appliances are also contributing factors.
Here’s an example of oxidation -- imagine rust attacking metal. As rust eats through metal, the metal weakens and decays, until it no longer works. This is what happens to our body when free radicals attack. Organs, cells and other parts of the body can be weakened by oxidation which leads to cancer, skin/heart diseases, dementia and osteoarthritis.
Having said that, cacao scores are among the top ORAC foods available, and a single piece of really healthy dark chocolate can provide all the nutritional ORAC support needed for an entire day! Experts believe that getting between 3000 and 5000 ORAC units a day is optimal; whether from chocolate or fruits and veggies.
