Make the most of your pattern breaks. (Changing directions, new projects…)

Perhaps it wasn’t part of the plan. Maybe you were just taking a day off to be with the family. One thing leads to another and several days later, you are faced with getting back in the groove.

Whether you spend one to two hours a day or twelve, there always seems to be something left on your To-Do list. As you prepare to dive in again, this may be the perfect time to make the most of your pattern breaks.

IBO Toolbox is my primary work area. I can see the definite effects of not continuing my efforts here. By the same token, there are other places where I need to expend my energy.

Because of the repetitive nature of my Click-by-Click GIMP Instructionals, I have decided to start posting them on the Nove-Noga Blog. I began by setting up categories for the new entries. One of the new categories is GIMP Basics, a listing of basic operations and techniques.

The  Nove-Noga Blog is one of the neglected areas of my efforts. When I started the Nove-Noga site, I knew next to nothing. Although I am a programmer by nature, there is so much to consider when setting up your websites and blogs. I started by setting up a classic HTML site for my home pages and later decided to investigate the possibilities of WordPress.

Although I cleaned the comments a couple of months ago, there were more than two thousand comments to moderate. Obviously, this is a high traffic area of my site, even though many of the comments were simple spam. I assume that these commenters needed to be looking in order to leave comments. Now that I have “cleaned house” I will keep up to date. *NB: All legitimate comments are welcome as long as your links are clean.*

While I was on cleanup detail, I took advantage of the moment to upgrade the Nove-Noga Blog to the most recent versions available. If you are interested, I am using the “Graphene” theme and have found several interesting functions available in the basic package. As in all my efforts, these were all free options.

With the large amount of spam to deal with, I considered applying Akismet to the Nove-Noga Blog. Unfortunately, it is not free to “business” blogs. Besides, the strictures of Akismet might keep me from seeing the comments of my Great IBO Friends and Associates.

One interesting sideline that popped up was in the Settings/discussion area of my WordPress Dashboard. Among the several options for Default Avatar was the “Gravatar” option. As I recalled having set this up previously, I chose this for the option. This is another Branding Tool that deserves further review. (More to do before I get back to IBO and my routine.)

All in all, despite my apparent absence from IBO Toolbox, this has been a very productive time. Having decided to make the most of my pattern break, I have also devoted some time to get ahead on some of my writing. With a few extra PRs in the pipeline, I should be able to keep up if the heat and humidity doesn’t drive me away from the keyboard too early.
