About.Me, Another Tool For Self-Promotion

FavIcon, Another Tool For Self-Promotion:

Note: This is the 27th in the “GetStarted” Sequence.

When I first signed up for About.Me, a couple of years ago, it was just one more in a cavalcade of possibilities. I took a brief look at it, uploaded one of my original pics, made a couple of changes and went on.

I didn’t have a social media strategy in mind. I was barely making it through the storm of information. The person suggesting it was quite interesting and I respected his opinion enough to follow set it up. Whether I overlooked some of their options at the time or they have been expending effort to make it another powerful tool for Self-Promotion, today About.Me is a tool well worth a good look.

Over the past several months, I have received several inquiries and a few polite comments on my About.Me page. Sorry folks. Until now, I just haven’t had the time to give it a proper look.

About.Me for Free:
I am a firm believer in the value of Free Tools. Until you Know that the upgrades will provide a measurable ROI (Return On Investment), I do not believe in upgrading. But the best time, from the Vendor’s standpoint, to get you to upgrade is in the beginning. Forewarned is forearmed.

Service Options:
Basic is Free containing: Essential Features; Who Viewed You; Custom Collections; and Business Cards (Free with Shipping and Handling.).
Premium is $4/month billed annually.  Use a Custom Domain (; Remove All Branding; Add Google Analytics to your site.
Promote is Coming Soon at $9/month. More exposure through the network with featured placement and directories.

That being said, we will continue with the Free Setup for About.Me.

OneNote Notebook, KeePass Password Tool

Open OneNote to “Setups” Section. Add a new page for About.Me. Add each piece of information as you need it to your Notebook or take the time at the end to create a complete Record. This is one to detail in your home records.

KeePass is useful for organizing your passworded accounts as well as keeping track of your passwords. I recommend a Group for Business Media similar to About.Me.

Open KeePass. RightClick the Internet Group. Select Add Group. In {Add Group} Set the new Group Name. I suggest “Business Media” for the various social media tools you will be placing here. Click the Icon selection tool and choose an Icon for your new Group. Click [OK] to set the Icon and Click [OK] to add your new group. Select your New Group, then the Wrench Icon for [Add Entry]. Set the Title to “About.Me”, the User Name to the Email Address you will be using and the URL to
As mentioned, I am returning to About.Me some two years after I created my account. In the set up process, they will let you choose your User Name. Judging by mine, they will not permit dashes (-) however they do permit Dots. ( Given my experiences updating my page, I am sure they will walk you through the process.

Sign Up with About.Me:
Go to and Sign up with your First name, Last name, and  Email address or Join with Facebook or Twitter.

Your UserName at About.Me:
I recommend that you try to pursue your Branding Efforts whenever possible as part of your social media strategy. To this end, I always try to use some form of Nove-Noga.

Making Changes:
About.Me will probably walk you through the set up process. If you took the time to design your About.Me page based on the information in this post, it will probably be a walk in the park. If not, you may have to return as I have. After Login, to reach the Edit Function as well as several more options, Click on your Name and Select Edit Page. This will take you to the {Edit Page} dialog box.

Edit Page – Photo:
This is your background photo and can be dragged and dropped. By experiment I found a 1000x626 fit fairly well. The recommended size it 1680x1050 at 72 DPI. In the “My My, Isn’t that Interesting?” file. When I uploaded the correct size of image, it didn’t display the way that I wanted. The 1000x626 Image actually gave me the most control.

*NB: There are tools at the bottom of the Dialog Box that allow you to Position your Photo: Left; Center; Right; Fit to Window; and Fill Window.*

*Note: The tool to upload your Bio Photo is at the bottom of the Biography Page. *

Position Your Bio Box:
The Bio Box can be moved by simple Drag and Drop to whatever position you want it to be against your Background Photo. This trick also works with the Edit Page Box while you are working on your page. According to the Help Section, the width of the Bio Box is determined by your Name or Headline, whichever is longer according to the Font and Size Chosen.

Edit Page - Biography:
   Headline: (No Formatting available.)
Biography: (Links can be inserted but they show complete.)
Interests: (Up to 10 Interest Tags so that you can be found in a search of About.Me) This is like choosing your keywords. You may want to experiment with this a little. Do we Need to include our Name? What other searches do you want to show up in?
*Note: Displaying Interest Tags is optional.
Bio Photo: I uploaded one of my Standard 200x200 Pics.

Edit Page – Colors:
You can from a variety of Background Patterns in lieu of a Background Photo. Color and opacity are up to you. You can also choose the Bio Box and Font Colors to suit your display. Remember the impression you are trying to create and the colors and motifs you have already used. On the other hand, experimentation may be the order of the day. I found many Ideas and Suggestions in the Help Section. This post is intended to get your feet on the ground. The rest is up to you.

*Note: Your Background Image should be able to stand alone as it is used in several places throughout About.Me without the clutter of the Bio Box. *

Edit Page – Fonts:
They only had 24 Fonts showing but I found the selection impressive nonetheless. You can choose the Font and Size for your Name, Headline, Biography and Links. I adjusted my Headline Font to match the width of my Name after I chose both fonts.

Edit Page – Apps:
This is where you set the links to your Social Media Networks. Perhaps I was being overly cautious but I elected not to let About.Me post to Facebook during my Update of the Page. I could imagine dozens of posts as I made changes. I added Facebook, Google, Twitter and Linked in as Aps. I added my Facebook pages as Links. These I was able to Edit in the next section.

Edit Page – Links:

First I Edited my Facebook Fan Page Names to something understandable. Then I added a few more Links from Nove-Noga that I thought people might find useful. Like the Facebook Links, they came through as Generic to Nove-Noga. I was able to Edit them to something more useful.

Edit Page – Contact:
Consider how much Contact Info you wish to share.
   Phone Number:
   Postal Code:
*Note: You can choose not to display the Contact information.

Edit Page – Promote:
I will let you explore this one for yourself. Just remember to Think before you Click. About.Me may be just what you need for another Self-Promotion tool. This section will guide you on how to utilize About.Me in several ways.

About.Me Backstory:
Backstory is newest addition to the About.Me presentation. It appears to be intended to make it easier for Job Seekers and Employers to find each other. The editing toggles are not as clear here. I had to push to get my Quote and Mission Statement to come out the way I wanted. Each of the Backstory sections has Toggles to hide/unhide content.

Backstory - Color Scheme:
I first clicked the button to “coordinate colors with photo” then clicked the palette choices offered until I found something that I felt I could work with.

Backstory – Heading:
Introduce yourself with your tagline, an inspirational quote, your philosophy or mission statement.

Backstory – Contact Button:
This simple Toggle turns on/off a [Contact Me] button that opens a simple window to permit a 1000 character message to your email account from the account of another About.Me member.

Backstory – Work:

It is suggested by About.Me that you “Include Work Experience that is at least somewhat relevant to what you’re looking for, or in the industry you’re currently working in. Include your job title, company name, duration of work and a brief description of responsibilities and achievements.”
   Current Role:
   How Long in Role:

Backstory – Work History:
   Job Title:
   Description of Duties:

Backstory - Skills & Expertise:
List your Skills, Expertise or Certifications, one per line.
Backstory - Education:
   Degree or Field of Study:
   Finished When?:

Backstory - Location:
Are you “Open to relocation or travel? List the location worldwide that you would prefer to work in.” The Title on this is “I’m looking in…” For me, I chose Las Vegas, Nevada. It produces a very nice MapQuest Image for the location.

Backstory - Professional Links:
The Professional Links area is for Links to your work on other websites. Your Portfolio and Blogs belong here. Be sure to include the title and web address.
*Note: The URLs have to be entered by hand.*
   Link Title:
   Link URL:

Backstory – Preview:
When you are nearing completion of your Backstory, scroll back to the top of that section and choose “Preview” to get an Idea of the Presentation of your Backstory. Fortunately, you can edit anything you need to before you set the Toggle for Show Backstory to On.

SevenOaksArtTo Recap:
Tools – OneNote to Record the Information posted on About.Me. KeePass to save the information for the Link and your Password.

Task – Create a Presentation on About.Me that you are happy to share with the world.

One more Feature of About.Me is your Collections. In the process of connecting my Facebook and Twitter Accounts, About.Me created two Collections for me, “Twitter Friends” and “Facebook Friends”. One reason for my caution in turning on Notifications to Facebook was that I didn’t want to drown my Facebook with related posts. Not certain, just my usual paranoia.

The Apps Section actually gives visitors a look at your posts from each of the Social Media Apps that you have added. It is quite a bit more than I have seen anywhere else. It can also be a great tool for attracting new “Friends” in each of the Social Networks.

The Facebook App at About.Me can be set to Share when you make a material update to your page, share when you are added to a directory and to share when you compliment or “fave” a page. If this is active when you performed a bulk action, you might easily overwhelm your timeline. Consider Adding Facebook to your Apps as your Last Step before setting the Toggle for Show Backstory to On.

My Plan is to acknowledge one or two from each Collection in each day. We can always use something else to share. About.Me is more than another tool for Self-Promotion. About.Me has put together an Impressive Product that stands on its own as powerful tool that can reach across many networks.
