Why do I want to Shorten my URLs

FavIcon do I want to Shorten my URLs?

URL def: Uniform Resource Locator. The Links that make the World Wide Web work.

I mean, a URL is just a URL isn’t it? Why do I want to shorten my URLs? Well there can be several reasons for using a URL tool. One of the first reasons is to shorten a long ugly URL into something a little shorter. Sometimes the longer URLs common to affiliate marketing and network marketing will “break” in emails and other communications. Then you would have to piece them back together to make them work.

For an example, one of my URLs at All Solutions Network is
Now that is an ugly link at 68 characters. It looks a little better as,

Notice that with the TinyURL I was able to create a base “Alias” for my All Solutions Link that will work for all of the pages with the same Base URL. I could have used the TinyURL to create a “blind” link with a random collection of letters. Personally, I prefer not to use “blind” links.

*Note: All Solutions Network  (ASN) is also known as The Solutions Network (TSN) and there are two Base URLs for your Links. Thus I named the second, “bin/d2”, series “Nove-NogaTSN”.*

URL Tool Features:
Another reason to use a URL tool is to take advantage of features available through the service. This can vary widely. If you have special needs not mentioned here, I am sure you can find a tool that will do what you need.

With the IBOurl, you can create a new link with your own Title and Keywords and a Click Counter that you can see and reset from the IBOURL page at IBO Toolbox. You also have the option of Branding your new link with the IBO Top Menubar. The Menubar will display your stats at IBO Toolbox and has several additional options. When you use the Menubar, your IBO Alias is displayed as the final URL seen by your visitor.

*Note: Always check your results. If the website is too wide for the screen, the IBO Menubar can prevent seeing some of the information on the right side of the display.*

IBOurl with Menubar:
One of the first IBOurls I created was for the opportunity that got me interested in marketing in the first place,

The first step creates the IBOurl as a blind link.

Using the .net Alias step with your IBOurl gives you a much better looking link that will work with your IBO Toolbox PRs. Click this link to see an example of the IBOurl with Menubar.

One of the big advantages to the IBOurl is that you can edit it later if necessary. You can easily change the Title, Keywords and even the Target URL if necessary. Links:
You may also need to use URL Tools if you are doing classified advertising. Some of the companies will permit only so many ads with the same link. In these cases, you may want to use a URL Shortener with at least limited tracking ability like the IBOurl or the Google tool,

For example, using one of my All Solutions Network URLs,
I created a new URL that could be used in an advertisement.

A World of Opportunity and Solutions.

With ASN You Can’t Fail!...
Unless you Fail to Act!
All Solutions Network

In this form, the Advertisement is only 163 Characters instead of 235. With the link you have some significant statistics available to you. You can see how many Clicks you have received in the past: two hours; day; week; month and all time. Click on “details” and see your clicks in graph form as well as information on Referrers, Browsers, Platforms, and Countries.

Just for fun, Click on the link above. Let’s see how many countries, platforms and browsers we can record in the next week.

*Note: “All URLs and click analytics are public and can be accessed by anyone.”

Keeping Track of Your URLs:

It would be a good Idea to add a section to OneNote for the URLs you Create. With a page for each group of URLs, you will have a better chance of keeping track of the links you have created.

SevenOaksArtTo Recap:
The TinyURL can be used to create a new link or Alias that can be used as the base for multi-paged sites as well as being used as a standard URL Link Shortener. The IBOurl is very useful for personal branding by adding the Menubar to the top of your display. It has a Click counter for basic information and is editable in case you need to make changes later. The URLs can be easily created and offer much more tracking information.

Why do I want to Shorten my URLs? I shorten them to make them easier to use; to add features to the link such as Branding with the IBO Toolbox Menubar and to permit tracking and provide information to improve our marketing efforts. We owe it to ourselves to make use of every tool available to achieve our ends. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Nove-Noga!
