The Viridian Energy Network, a leading Green Energy third party electricity provider, just announced the addition of a 20% Green Energy component to the state RPS. A Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) ensures that a minimum amount of renewable energy is included in the portfolio of the electricity resources serving a state. Most RPS laws require states to increase the percentage of renewable power sources used from the current amount to between 10 and 20 percent over about 20 years. Increasing the required amount of renewable power required over time allows industry to grow into the demand and can put the power industry on a path toward increased sustainability. RPS laws ensure that states will have a diverse energy portfolio to protect us into the future. Viridian’s Everyday Green energy was always 20% green, making up the difference between the state’s RPS and 20%. Now Viridian is committing to be a full 20% greener than whatever the state’s RPS is. Viridian currently services New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania & Maryland. The Illinois launch date is August 1st with Massachusetts to follow shortly thereafter. Just an example of the commitment to green, in New Jersey Viridian customers will receive a 28.5% green energy product, New York customers will enjoy 39% green energy delivered to the grid, greening up the grid one meter at a time.

A Higher Standard
In order to promote an increased usage of renewable energy and the development of renewable products, many states have adopted Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS). An RPS is a statewide benchmark for the percentage of electricity that must come from green, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Continued development of renewable resources is largely driven by the adoption of these standards. As many states continue to work toward green energy solutions and higher renewable standards, Viridian is proud to lead the way with our commitment to an additional standard of 20% green energy in all our markets above the states RPS.

How does “green energy” work?
To help facilitate the sale of renewable electricity nationally, a system was established that separates renewable electricity generation into two parts: the electricity produced by a renewable generator and the renewable “attributes” of that generation. These renewable attributes are sold separately as renewable energy certificates (RECs). One REC is issued for each megawatt-hour (MWh) unit of renewable electricity produced. Buying RECs helps build a market for renewable electricity and contributes to environmental sustainability.
