From the Environmental Protection Agency website “A REC (pronounced: rek) represents the property rights to the environmental, social, and other nonpower qualities of renewable electricity generation. 50 a month for 1000 kWh of clean, green, renewable, energy credits But petitions only go so far. Don't believe me? BUT oil and gas don't, they are subsidized by the US Government by the tens of billions of dollars! Do a little research yourself. A REC, and its associated attributes and benefits, can be sold separately from the underlying physical electricity associated with a renewable-based generation source. Money speaks louder to politicians than petition signatures and other actions. I could provide other descriptions of REC's that are as wordy and where likely written by lawyers, but basically a REC is a form of renewable energy currency that helps to subsidize the development of renewable energy. We need to back things like that up with more action and yes a little money. So what can we do about it? It costs very little, with the Green energy provider I use it's only $19. I am not going to provide a link to prove it, as it will be biased. We can sign petitions like this one at Change. Billions of dollars of our tax payer money is subsidizing this industry that is destroying our environment and our future! We can speak very loudly to them and help support the green energy industry by purchasing REC's ourselves and asking others to do the same. org That's always a good activist thing to do. Go to Google, type in “oil industry subsidies” and you will most likely be shocked at what you find. Now a lot of people don't like the word subsidy, I have heard people say that renewable energy should stand on it's own without subsidies like oil and gas do. Buying a REC does not directly increase the amount of Green energy that is weird directly into your home or business, but it does increase the amount that is flowing into our energy grid that everyone uses.
